On July 30, 2025, Agents from the Columbia Office of the FCC’s Enforcement Bureau (Agents) conducted an investigation and determined, using direction finding techniques, that the source of the interference to the Allegheny County system was a signal emanating from the residence of David O. Knudtson (Knudtson), licensee of amateur radio station KD3ASC. After the Agents notified Knudtson of the interference issue, he produced a handheld radio (identified as a BTech UV-Pro). An examination of the radio determined that it had been modified to monitor the Allegheny County channel, and its “Audio Relay” feature had been activated. This feature turned Knudtson’s radio into a simplex repeater that was retransmitting the Allegheny County channel. Knudtson surrendered the radio to the Agents. Subsequently, the Agents verified that the interference to the Allegheny County system had ceased.” #communications #RF #radio #law

The multiplier (“PMU”) was a 28-pin DIP, the divider (“PDU”) was another 28-pin DIP, the “special logic [functional] unit” was another 28-pin DIP, and the “steering unit” (of which there were three, one for each of the previous three modules) was another 28-pin DIP, and there were 19 vertical-microcode ROM chips: “Each functional unit is controlled by its own micro-instruction ROM.” To me it sounds like there were at most three CPUs, each consisting of a steering unit and either a multiplier, a divider, or a “special logic unit”, and maybe just one CPU split across 25 chips; when the paper uses the term “CPU”, it seems to be referring to all of these functional units together and perhaps the ROMs as well, not just one of them.
Moreover, the multiplier and divider just blindly did a multiply and, respectively, a divide, every “frame”. Only the “special logic function” could do “Conditional, and Unconditional data branching”. And all three “functional units” were controlled by some control bits from the “system executive control”, a group of ROM chips.
The “steering unit” was a “three channel serial digital data multiplexer” with three outputs which could add or subtract data under the control of part of the instruction word on its way to the PMU, PDU, or SLF.
It seems like the program counter, or rather counters, were located in the microcode ROM chips, which could increment them or reset or reload them under the control of some control lines. #hardware #architecture #history

But their right of possession to such outside parts of such veins or ledges shall be confined to such portions thereof as lie between vertical planes drawn downward as above described, through the end-lines of their locations, so continued in their own direction that such planes will intersect such exterior parts of such veins or ledges.” Does that convey ownership of the land? Abstract: We describe linear-time algorithms for solving a class of problems that involve transforming a cost function on a grid using spatial information. These problems can be viewed as a generalization of classical distance transforms of binary images, where the binary image is replaced by an arbitrary function on a grid. Alternatively they can be viewed in terms of the minimum convolution of two functions, which is an important operation in grayscale morphology. A consequence of our techniques is a simple and fast method for computing the Euclidean distance transform of a binary image. Our algorithms are also applicable to Viterbi decoding, belief propagation, and optimal control.

It explains the heap clogging problem: “In addition to lixiviant consumption, pre-precipitation products of some of these gangue minerals (gypsum, jarosite, silica) have potential negative effects on leach permeability by plugging up of the pores in the heaps.” Explains that basically only cyanide and sulfuric acid leaching is currently used, despite thiosulfate and thiourea experiments. “Heap Leaching: is a technique where run-of-mine or crushed (generally >5 mm) and/or agglomerated ores are stacked over an engineered impermable pad.”

on 02025-08-24#PDF of #STM32 RM0008 reference manual for STM32F1xxx, §13.3.7, relevant to DMA request routing. On here all the possible request signals for a channel just go into an OR gate, and there’s a single EN bit for the whole channel. TIM1_UP is one of six signals on DMA1 Channel 5. “The 7 requests (...) are simply logically ORed before entering the DMA1, this means that only one request must be enabled at a time.
The peripheral DMA requests can be independently activated/de-activated by programming the DMA control bit in the registers of the corresponding peripheral.” No CHSEL field. §14.4.4 TIMx_DIER looks exactly the same as on the STM32F4xxx, with UDE, CC1DE, TDE, etc. §14.2 clarifies: “Update: counter overflow/underflow, counter initialization (by software or internal/external trigger)”.
1757-page #PDF of #STM32 RM0090 reference manual for STM32F4xxx, section relevant to routing DMA requests to DMA controllers: Table 44 shows that Channel 6 of Stream 5 on DMA 2 is TIM1_UP. There’s a 3-bit field CHSEL in DMA_SxCR which selects which of the 8 channels is active for that stream. §§17.3.2, 17.3.6, and 17.3.9 explains that you need to set various bits in TIMx_DIER to enable generation of DMA requests from the timer; §17.4.4 on p. 570/1757 has 15 bits to enable interrupts and DMA requests on different conditions, such as UDE, “Update DMA request enable”. But the STM32F1xxx is different.

on 02024-11-28latest #CREA #PDF slides on #China: “China #energy and emissions trends: November 2024 snapshot”. Astonishing: “Total power generation increased by 6.6%, while large-scale power generation grew by 2.1%, indicating most power generation growth comes from #solar and #wind installations that are outside of the industrial production statistics. (...) National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) underreports wind and solar generation, particularly from rooftop and smaller solar plants.” I think those figures are year-over-year rather than month-over-month because, on the same slide, they say, “solar power generation saw an increase of 46.2%.” Carbon emissions are said to have peaked in February 02024 despite #coal electric power generation growing 2.2% (in what I assume is year over year). Astoundingly: “After H1 2024 saw no new permits issued for coal-based steel plants, China issued a policy in August suspending all new #steel plant permits.” (Are they going to import their steel from India, or what?)
on 02024-11-27#PDF slides from #CREA (the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, which seems like it ought to be “CRECA”), entitled “#China #energy and emissions trends: August 2024 snapshot”, showing a rise in #coal imports to an all-time high of 500 million tonnes per year! And a rise in total coal use to about 5100 million tonnes per year (at ≈25MJ/kg, that’s 4TW), plus 780 million tonnes a year of crude #oil (1.0TW) and 410 billion cubic meters of gas per year (490GW at 37.8kJ/ℓ), for a fossil total of 5.5TW. There’s a plot of “oil products” but I’m not sure counting that wouldn’t be double-counting. Also plots by-month #solar energy production by month going back to 02018, showing an all-time high of 40 TWh in June 02024 (55GW), which is a pretty low capacity factor given the November stat of 790GW installed from the NEA reports. If we project 790GW backward at a 3.3% monthly growth rate from November to June, 5 months, we predict 672GW installed as of June, of which 55GW would be only an 8% capacity factor. And that’s in the peak month! Not even year-round! So the 54GW they added of fossil-fuel power over the last 12 months is probably still more than the 256GW of solar after adjusting for capacity factors. The slide on p. 7 showing a bargraph of solar capacity added in the first half of each year since 02010 is pretty staggering. It seems to show that the high #pricing for #photovoltaic modules in the 02018-02022 period suppressed demand rather badly in China itself, not just abroad, though that pricing isn’t mentioned.

For example, people have automated how they tie their shoelaces or how they stand up from sitting in a chair. When performance has reached this level of automaticity and effortless execution, additional experience will not improve the accuracy of behavior nor refine the structure of the mediating mechanisms, and consequently, the amount of accumulated experience will not be related to higher levels of performance.
In direct contrast, aspiring experts continues to improve their performance as a function of more experience because it is coupled with DP. The key challenge for aspiring expert performers is to avoid the arrested development associated with automaticity. These individuals purposefully counteract tendencies toward automaticity by actively setting new goals and higher performance standards, which require them to increase speed, accuracy, and control over their actions, as is shown in the upper arm of Figure 3. The experts deliberately construct and seek out training situations to attain desired goals that exceed their current level of reliable performance.”

Gives equivalent circuits, describes how to compose logic elements. “It is clear from the discussion that theoretically a single flux-steering gate can generate any combinational logic function.” Also describes how to use a network of simple toroidal cores to replicate all of the above. Unfortunately the scanned oscilloscope photographs are of quality too poor to read unambiguously. Includes a kind of “magnetic diode” that must be reset after use. #toread

Proposes the following design process: analysis of specification → initial form generation (either manually or through topopt) → choice of orientations during manufacturing → geometry optimization → validation → maybe start over. Apparently the dude designed a mounting bracket for his dissertation using off-the-shelf software at the University of Grenoble. I guess not every university can afford to have standards. They have a wicked mounting bracket and e-beam melter though.

on 02016-09-22#pdf #paper on “Multiple-Material #Topology-Optimization of Compliant Mechanisms (#mechanical #flexures) Created Via PolyJet #3D-Printing”. It says that multiple materials has the potential to eliminate the need for thin, weak sections. (PolyJet is a process that selectively deposits either of two liquid resin monomers and polymerizes them with UV. One of the resins is an elastomer.) Their results do not seem to justify that level of enthusiasm, as they still contain thin, weak sections, and they don’t seem to have measured the output force. #manufacturing

on 02016-08-08#PDF of #Tandem tech report 86.2, which explains the process-pair #fault-tolerance approach, and in particular why they were moving away from having the active process transmit images of its memory space to the backup process. Contains the very amusing sentence, “We believe most faults in production software are transients (Heisenbugs).”
on 02016-08-08#Tandem Guardian Programmer’s Guide #PDF. Very interesting: “Passive checkpoint is impractical in programs using the standard heap, so it is used mostly in TAL and pTAL programming.” A bunch of stuff about “sync depth” for #fault-tolerance that I don’t understand; apparently that’s a number of requests that “the system” remembers the responses to, replaying them if you fail over from a checkpoint, so that you can wait that many requests before checkpointing.
on 02016-08-08#Tandem Guardian User’s Guide #PDF, 1993–2000, with a #TACL #tutorial and a bunch of other sysadmin stuff. Apparently “NSK” is “NonStop Kernel”. Apparently “supergroup” user ids are (255,n), and “EDIT files”, file code 101 are the kind of file that TACL scripts are stored in, and that’s what TEDIT creates. The TACL command interpreter program is in $SYSTEM.SYSnn.TACL for some number nn. Explains users, groups, etc.; rather surprisingly you can run your command interpreter as a failover process pair: “If you want the remote TACL process to run as a NonStop™ process pair instead, enter \HERST.TACL / NAME, CPU 1 / 2.” It had command-line editing that sucked total shit.
Debugging #Tandem programs from Eclipse on Microsoft Windows. Apparently there are “process Snapshot files” with file code 130 that are like core files that you can feed to the debugger. (Also you can connect over ssh to debug live processes on TNS/E and TNS/X but not TNS or TNS/R, where you should use Inspect directly. Apparently the ssh debugging thing works by remote-controlling an Inspect process through its command line.) This shitty #PDF is full of fucking screenshots of Eclipse, but some of them are actually interesting, like Eclipse’s process browser showing the running processes on a live Tandem system. TNS/X is apparently amd64, from the register view, while TNS/E has 8 branch registers, 128 GP registers, 64 floating-point registers… looks like Itanic!
on 02016-08-08#pdf on HP’s “I/O Essentials” monitoring thing. Apparently they had Linux support in versions 1.2.0 to 1.8.0 and dropped it in version 1.9.0? But you can only run the console on HPE servers.
on 02016-08-08#Tandem #PDF from 1993 about their new “D-series” operating system, the one that allowed more than 256 processes per CPU and variable-length filenames, although this document came out with D20, when D10 was already out. At the time they still supported Pascal. Oh my god, TNS had FCBs like CP/M? Also “process control blocks”? Apparently “TNS/R” refers to the hardware, while they just called the operating system “the operating system”; not sure when they started calling it “NSK”. Apparently processes can “open” “applications”, such as “word processors or calculators”, and “requester processes” can “open” a “server” (becoming “an opener”) to make a request and get a reply, either by name or by PIN, and “a typical application consists of several processes”. The old filenames were 12 words, which I guess means 8 bytes each of volume, subvolume, and filename, but the new format didn’t actually expand the limits! (Except in a few corner cases.) Device names begin with dollar signs, such as $TAPE001, $LAZRPTR.#QWERTY, \TOKYO.$TERM080, or \NY.$LINEPTR.#ROOM10. Server names do too, such as $SERVR, $Z146, $SPLS. You can identify remote processes in this way too; you can open both local and remote processes as files. [node-name.]$process-name[:sequence-number][.#q1[.q2]] is the full process name format. The sequence number is used if you want to ensure you notice if a process dies and gets restarted (but not if a backup process takes over for a primary process). Unnamed processes can be referred to with $:cpu:pin, where cpu is a number from 0 to 15.
#PDF of the #Tandem C runtime library reference manual for C programs compiled by the TNS C compiler, which I think is the one with 16-bit pointers and ints some of the time, but not the TNS/R native C compiler. Apparently there is a thing called “Edit files” where you can seek by line number? Which can skip lines? But this involves sequential scanning of the file? And the environment variables are STDIN, STDOUT, STDERR (filenames) and DEFAULTS, which is the cwd? Oh, and to perform a “backup open” from a “backup process”, the “primary process” must send you the “file open state information” through “the $RECEIVE facility”, which is a file?
on 02016-08-08#PDF on the #Tandem Enscribe “database”, which is more like an ISAM library (with an option for unstructured files which are like Unix files). A file can have partitions on different volumes (disks) and different networks nodes.
on 02016-08-08#PDF on #Tandem SQL databases; apparently their old one is called “SQL/MP” and their new one is called “SQL/MX” and supports SQL:1999, moving-window aggregations, statistical sampling, pub-sub, batched results, Java stored procedures, right outer joins, and using a #SQL value expression in a SELECT list or a scalar subquery as the update value in an UPDATE SET clause. MXCI is their SQL REPL for it: “conversational interface”. Interesting note: “Non-audited tables [the Transaction Management Facility, TMF, is a part of their OS that does update logging, called ‘auditing’] are not protected by transactions and follow a different logging and error handling model than audited tables. In NonStop SQL/MX, certain situations such as DML error occurrences or utility operations with DML operations can lead to inconsistent data within a non-audited table or between a non-audited table and its indices.”
#PDF on #Tandem profile-guided optimization, which is supported for programs in C, C++, and pTAL, but not COBOL. Lots of notes about things like what happens if you “move a source file between an OSS directory and a Windows directory or Guardian subvolume.”
on 02016-08-08#PDF on #Tandem linkers eld and xld: eld produces files with a file type of 500 for TNS/E, while xld produces files with a file type of 800 for TNS/X. “The development environments (Guardian, OSS or PC)” is mentioned. Their invocation is Unixy; object files are ELF. There’s also a run-time linker rld. The TNS/E C compiler is in a place such as $data01.toolsy02.ccomp, which with the name of the node (“system name”) might be \SPEEDY.$DATA01.TOOLSY02.CCOMP. This would be mapped into the Guardian namespace at /G/data01/toolsy02/ccomp. Apparently their old linker was called “Binder” and was interactive.

on 02015-11-03a #cvt (continuously variable transmission) using cones and a ring with very low power control: “By moving the ring, and with that the two contact points, parallel to the cone surface the running radius of both the ingoing and the outgoing cone changes. This means a change in the transmission ratio. The ring is moved by giving it a small steering angle, similar to steering a bicycle wheel. By adjusting this steering angle, the position of the ring and as a consequence the transmission ratio, can be controlled. The steering is done by a small electric motor. The advantage of this system is that little power is needed for the ratio adjustment (less than 20 W). A disadvantage is that similar with a bicycle, the steering angle has to be adjusted continuously to keep the system stable.” This is exactly what I was hoping you could do with a cone ring transmission to build an infinitely variable transmission for robotics. on 02015-11-02This #pdf #paper reports that zinc sulfide #phosphorescent #materials have a bandgap for ultraviolet radiation at 336 nm, and you can excite it with 325-nm light, although its photoluminescence spectrum has a strong peak at 396 nm and a weaker one at 478 nm, leading to the blue-green color we’re familiar with.
on 02015-10-17#pdf compares conventional copper-doped zinc sulfide #phosphorescent #materials to SrAl₂O₄ (under the trade name LumiNova). Zinc sulfide (ZnS:Cu) is said to have about an order of magnitude faster decay, with an “afterglow extinction” of about 200' rather than SrAl₂O₄'s 2000'. There's also a nice log-log graph of the exponential decay, showing a decrease from 200 mcd/m² at 1' to 1 mcd/m² at 50', which gives τ ≈ 9'. SrAl₂O₄’s afterglow lasts much longer not only because it decays more slowly but also because it starts out much brighter. Lots of tips on industrial pigment processing.
on 02015-10-17#pdf #materials #paper on SrAl₂O₄ #phosphorescent pigments, finding that particle size doesn’t affect decay time, which decays from 250 mcd after 1' to 15 mcd after 30' (a factor of 8, so τ ≈ 15') for the bluish-green version, and from 280 mcd after 1' to 15 mcd after 30'. But this is not the standard zinc sulfide phosphor.

Their core “λJS” is block-scoped and has side effects (computed property assignment expressions), with a Felleisen-Hieb small-step semantics, but not variable mutation or statement sequencing. It elides constant-property access e.x but not object literals {x:e} in favor of computed lookup. #bootstrapping #pdf
