The so-called #ARM #EABI is the standard ABI for #Linux, supplanting the so-called OABI. Explains how system calls work in #asm. Also explains the checkered history of interworking. Debian architecture “armel” is EABI, “arm” is OABI, dropped in Squeeze.
The #ARM #EABI was apparently introduced in 02007 or thereabouts.
Oh, no, the #ARM #EABI is from 02003 and RealView 2.0 and later #GCC 4.1.0 and Linux 2.6.16.

#PDF #paper of DEC WRL TN-57, “Power Evaluation of Itsy Version 2.3”, on #power management for the #Itsy research prototype pocket Linux box, published October 02000, since I can no longer ftp to gatekeeper. Wow, things sure sucked back then: “According to the StrongARM SA-1100 manual [Int99] it takes approximately 160 ms to exit sleep mode (10 ms for the power to ramp up and 150 ms for the oscillator to stabilize) and 150 μs to enter it. The initialization software then takes about 1 ms,” and even deep-sleep mode was 5.4 milliwatts.

Since #Linux 2.6, #ARM system calls under the #EABI use the swi 0 or svc 0 instruction with the system call number in R7 and arguments in r0-r5, with 64-bit arguments starting in an even register. #asm
In #Linux on #ARM in #EABI, the system call arguments are in registers r0-r6, and the return value is in registers r0 and r1. #asm

#GCC options for #ARM ABIs (-mabi=) are just apcs-gnu, atpcs, aapcs, aapcs-linux, and iwmmxt. But there's an option to reserve a register for PIC: -msingle-pic-base -mpic-register=r10.
