Peter #Thiel on how to run #startups: like cults; an excerpt from Zero To One
discussion thread about #neural-networks and alternatives (commentary on a paper proposing decision forests). Gwern says, “The new GAN models over the past 2-3 months, like LS-GAN or WGAN, all seem to train much more stably. I’ve beaten up on WGAN with all sorts of strange tweaks and hyperparameter settings and while it may not work well, it’s never catastrophically diverged on me the way DCGAN would at the drop of a hat.”

#PDF of Flumerfelt’s 1998 dissertation on #aluminum #powder-metallurgy #materials processing; he finds that synthesizing his aluminum powder with gas atomization reaction synthesis ("GARS") was superior to existing commercial products, which were powdered by air atomization or gas atomization. Mentions that sintering aluminum powder in air has been shown to be possible but difficult by Storchheim (or maybe Storcheim) in 1974, in a paper called “Air sintering improves aluminum P/M economics”.
"Selfie" is a #self-sustaining system inspired by Oberon, a self-compiling compiler called starc (in and for a subset of C they call C*; single-pass recursive-descent, as you’d expect), operating system (“hypster”), standard library (“libcstar”), and emulator (“mipster”), all for a subset of MIPS-32 called MIPSter, all in about 7000 lines of C. (Or maybe C*, I’m not sure.) Goal: “provides an educational platform for teaching undergraduate and graduate students the design and implementation of programming languages and runtime systems.” By Christoph Kirsch.
