Text #editors on big computers like cellphones ought to be able to handle the full text of Moby Dick without #performance problems. The provided Markdown file thereof is 1204076 bytes, and according to my memcpycost.c, memcpy of such a size of thing on my old 2.4GHz Pentium N3700 would cost about 600 microseconds on one core and about 300 microseconds of memory bandwidth. On my Ryzen 5 3500U we should be talking about 120μs.

02019 #medicine review #CC BY #paper about #asbestos and lung #cancer. “The new knowledge gained through this review provides the evidence for synergism between asbestos exposure and tobacco smoke in lung cancer causation at a biological level. The evaluated statistical data conform best to a multiplicative model for the interaction effects of asbestos and smoking on the lung cancer risk, with no requirement for asbestosis. Any asbestos exposure, even in a heavy smoker, contributes to causation. Based on this information, we propose criteria for the attribution of lung cancer to asbestos in smokers and non-smokers.”
The obsolete Brin process used barium oxide to separate oxygen from air, but fractional distillation of liquefied air and electrolysis of water became cheaper. The process used pressure-swing absorption and desorption of oxygen from air above 800° after removing CO₂ from the air with lye. #materials #history

“Self-Calibration: Reversal, Redundancy, Error Separation, and “Absolute Testing”” abstract on #precision reversal methods etc. “Over the years many techniques have been developed for accurate measurement of part features without reference to an externally calibrated artefact. This #paper presents a partial survey of such methods for dimensional #metrology, their ranges of application, and their limits. Finally, the paper attempts to distil the common features of the various methods in the hope that this may provide the basis, or inspiration, for development of ‘new’ methods. (...) The methods described in this paper seem to be reasonably well known to the staff at the national measurement institutions and universities but are generally less familiar on the factory floor.”
