He had to keep checking the pH when rinsing the wood to find out when he’d removed all the lye, which took 7 (one-hour?) washings. The result was not bulletproof at all the first time around, not stopping even a pellet. Later iterations improved somewhat but still yielded to .22 LR, though with two layers glued together and rotated 90°, the bullet was stopped. Three layers didn’t even splinter on the back side and was able to stop a 9mm bullet.

(Liangbing Hu) in 02018 is to boil it with 2.5M lye and 0.4M sodium sulfite for 7 hours before densifying it with 5MPa for “about a day”, removing optimally 45% of the lignin to permit better compacting.
