Most treatments in #medicine are less effective than parachutes. “Among medical therapies, that [an NNT that comes very close to 1] is an unheard of benefit. In fact, in a study of over 80,000 reviews in the Cochrane database, there was only 1 therapy that reliably had a reduction in [mortality] as large as 33%! (Pereira 2012) Empirically speaking, we just don’t have parachutes in modern medicine.”

Maxim #Kachurovskiy’s #video of #manufacturing a concrete lathe "NanoEls" with #3D-printing for #machining. Except that he also bought some machined aluminum parts from #JLCPCB CNC. Includes open-source (?) G-code control thing that consumes STL files. He regrets not leaving two channels in the base to post-tension the concrete with M12 threaded rod and not vibrating the concrete enough to get the bubbles out.

#DIY #vacuum #video with a thick sheet of polycarbonate on top of a pressure-cooker pot with a silicone cooking mat as a gasket, tapping the hole in the polycarbonate using vise-grips as the tap wrench, drilled and tapped to match whatever your vacuum gauge hose fittings want. An O-ring compressed between a flange on the hose fitting and the polycarbonate surface by the tightening thread on the hose fitting provides the seal to the hose fitting. Doesn’t even damage the pressure cooker. But it’s not very DIY in the sense that he’s using a refrigeration vacuum pump to make it work, which is a bit like building an entire automobile starting with just some scrap metal, hand tools, and a Volkswagen Beetle. #manufacturing #bootstrapping

#NurdRage #video on a US$10 metal aspirator #vacuum pump for the homelab, for example for vacuum distillation boiling water at 39° or even 19°, as an alternative to cheap US$6 nylon diaphragm pumps. He powers his aspirator from a US$20 60W 100psi 12V diaphragm water pump recirculating in a polyethylene tub. He points out that this has the advantage that it “scrubs” the gas extracted by mixing it very well with the water.

Chinese People Continue Buying More #Bitcoin, Despite Strict Bans #news #China (from March) “In an interview with Nino Feng, a former exchange executive from China, she relayed that most people she knew were buying Bitcoin from over-the-counter services that operated with major exchanges as a sort of collection of informal merchants that paid an escrow fee to be listed on a major exchange to sell Bitcoin and Tether at a spread.
They would ask for money to be wired to local Chinese bank accounts (usually registered with a relatively unknown rural bank) - and there were many more desks that sold Tether rather than Bitcoin (since the spread on USDT/RMB is lower than BTC/RMB). Nino also indicated that many people take their Tether and trade down on second-tier exchanges with more crypto trading pairs, which was confirmed anecdotally by listening to X rooms filled with Chinese traders livestreaming their activity.”
