#Dr-Volt #video about converting an old Logitech mouse into a camera. It had a custom Logitech DIP on a single-sided PCB, separate from the ADNS 2610 camera sensor DIP, which has an 18×18 array of photodiodes visible under a microscope, with an “AGILENT 28D3D” label on the exposed die and a date of “2004”. Since he didn’t have a datasheet for the Logitech microcontroller, he hooked up the sensor chip to an #ESP32 S3 (programmed with #PlatformIO and VSCode) from his collection of #microcontrollers, like the one he’d built a laser scanning microscope from before. The chip uses an SPI-like protocol, but using a bidirectional data pin, and it exposes registers for not just Delta_X and Delta_Y but also some others including Pixel_Data, reads from which provide one pixel after another (so there’s no way to request a particular pixel). The mouse’s native resolution seems like a decent monochrome microscope, but with a very small field of view. He was able to get about a 3fps frame, unsurprising for what’s basically a debugging feature. He grafted the ESP32 into the mouse. #hoarding #electronics #hardware
#DIYPerks #video about things you can make from old laptops. Speakers (especially for laptops made around 02008). Heatpipes and cooling fan for cooling high-power LEDs. Diffusion sheets (for lampshades), fresnel lenses, and acrylic back panels (edge-lightable with LED filaments) from the screen. Or use them all together together with the existing backlight to get a lightbox or fake window. Non-smashed screens can be connected to an external driver board to make a monitor (they sell these?). Microphone (he recommends some prefab preamp board with AGC). Hard drive: disc sander for pencil sharpening (just by popping the cover off and gluing on sandpaper), wind chimes from platters, round mirror for analog clock face, laser galvo from the heads’ voice coil actuator (with a laser-pointer diode glued to it instead of using a mirror, you get an “analog VU meter” even with just one axis). 18650s from “older” battery packs (this video is from 02020, so maybe he means before 02010); he suggests sort of manually shapering your way through the plastic case, and using 2.8V as the lower limit for usable batteries, and apparently “single-cell battery-bank cases” are also a thing you can buy. Laptop webcams are usually USB! (Certainly true of this laptop here.) #hoarding #electronics #hardware
