What used to take a massive roof array and a bank of heavy lead-acid or AGM #batteries to run basic appliances now fits in a fraction of the space with lithium.” morphle gives #pricing: “15kWh 48V LFP battery around $1800 with low quality battery management system in metal box on wheels. Car batteries need more expensive inverters if you want to fast charge them (150kW-950kW) and super fast discharge them while driving fast (>100 kW). (...) The Mercedes eSprinter 56kW van costs around $80000 new but we sell 3 year old vans like this for $4000 without battery. So refurbished and converted to eCamper with 1800 mile range you pay $6700.” #vanlife #energy
on 02026-04-09Tom Brown’s “Solar and #batteries can power the world”. He summarizes, “Solar and batteries are cheap enough that most people can get most of their electricity from them, and save money. This equation gets better and better over time as their costs decline,” and more specifically, “solar and batteries can supply 90% of electricity for 80% of the world’s population at less than 80 €/MWh (including a fuel backup) with 2030 assumptions.” He doesn’t rely on wind, but does include it. He thinks stored fuel is the solution to Dunkelflauten. Based on “the Danish Energy Agency Technology Database for 2030 in 2020 euros: solar PV installed cost 384 €/kWp, lithium-ion battery installed cost 157 €/kWh.” Open code and data. He’s summing up his computations for “the 9196 1° by 1° pixels that contains more than 10,000 people, which is enough to include 99.86% of the population,” using capacity factors for wind and solar per pixel, though I’m not sure where his pixels are from. He assumes no demand response (conservative) and no seasonality (overoptimistic). #pricing #solar-energy #energy

on 02025-12-16#Orca on Austin Vernon’s #Standard-Thermal. “The first time we heat it up past 600ºC, the soil transforms—almost manufacturing brick from clay right underground. With an unexpectedly cheap resistor material, ultra simplified electronics, on-site photovoltaics, and a thermal leak rate under 1% per month, we’re looking at sub $0.10/kWhthermal and $50/kWthermal. (...) To give you a sense of the scale: heat travels about a meter through dirt in a month (δ ~ √(α t)), so a system designed for months-long discharge would involve hundreds of meters of pipe and resistor spaced about 2m apart. In that configuration, the system stores about 2MWhr thermal per meter of pipe+resistor. That’s fundamentally favorable—30 times the storage of a Tesla car battery for the cost of a meter of wire and pipe.” Much more detail on #pricing than Austin’s own posts. Also, on who the customer is: first process heat, then high-latitude customers that want renewable power on-site, and as a “world-conquering dream” to provide steam at stranded conventional power plants.

on 02025-12-12by Aravindh Rajan and Ian McKay at #Orca: #titanium #materials #pricing is 60× the cost of the ore (a cheap white pigment and filler for plastics) plus the change in enthalpy, a very high multiple, so this post explores where the extra cost comes from. Basically refining titanium is a five-step process, the first step being mining, and the cost doubles at each step. After three steps you have titanium sponge, which is hard to turn into the desired fully dense metal, which in turn is hard to machine, quadrupling the cost of final parts. Could you maybe just use the sponge, maybe as the filling/web in sandwich panels? Also ECM seems promising as a way to reduce the cost of the last step, machining. Lists past failed attempts to bring the cost down, including the FFC Cambridge process but also five more recent proposed cheaper processes. There’s an astonishing graph finding roughly 100× lower fatigue life for HIPped (hot isostatic pressed) titanium parts than for wrought parts. “Molten titanium will react with all metal oxides except yttria, zirconia, and calcium oxide. Due to calcium’s volatility at titanium’s melting point, titanium can also react with calcium oxide to form calcium vapor, if there is no excess of the latter.”

And a rise in total coal use to about 5100 million tonnes per year (at ≈25MJ/kg, that’s 4TW), plus 780 million tonnes a year of crude #oil (1.0TW) and 410 billion cubic meters of gas per year (490GW at 37.8kJ/ℓ), for a fossil total of 5.5TW. There’s a plot of “oil products” but I’m not sure counting that wouldn’t be double-counting. Also plots by-month #solar energy production by month going back to 02018, showing an all-time high of 40 TWh in June 02024 (55GW), which is a pretty low capacity factor given the November stat of 790GW installed from the NEA reports. If we project 790GW backward at a 3.3% monthly growth rate from November to June, 5 months, we predict 672GW installed as of June, of which 55GW would be only an 8% capacity factor. And that’s in the peak month! Not even year-round! So the 54GW they added of fossil-fuel power over the last 12 months is probably still more than the 256GW of solar after adjusting for capacity factors. The slide on p. 7 showing a bargraph of solar capacity added in the first half of each year since 02010 is pretty staggering. It seems to show that the high #pricing for #photovoltaic modules in the 02018-02022 period suppressed demand rather badly in China itself, not just abroad, though that pricing isn’t mentioned.

(...) we've delivered over 600 of the PPDS into Ukraine.” Has been supplying “100 of these every month since March”. Mentions a strike at an airbase at Kursk destroying “five fighter jets, a missile launcher, and an air defense system,” then another attack on a Russian site a few days later destroying two cargo planes, also probably with these cardboard drones. #Pricing quoted at AU$5000 per drone. #Slaughterbots #flying

Over ten minutes of worthless talking-head footage at the beginning of the video. 5.5 volts, reprogrammable. Part numbers sound like STM32F0 clones? PY32F0032A is 24MHz, 20KiB Flash, 3KiB SRAM, 18 GPIOs, 1 ADC, 3 timers, SPI, UART, I²C; the 30¢ PY32F030 has, among other things, 32KiB Flash, 8KiB RAM, and 48MHz; the 50¢ PY32F072 even has CAN and USB. You have to get them off LCSC. He’s using Keil and programming it with an ST-Link v2, and some people use Stm32Cube. Screenshots of py32.org, which still has Puran’s documentation for their chips. He’s only able to get the code to flash at 3.3V. He recommends reading the STM32 manual to learn how to set up the ADC, so I guess this really is an #STM32 clone. (He points at ST copyright notices in the BSD-licensed HAL source code.) He also recommends reading Puya’s example code in the zip file and the well-written PY32F030 series reference manual in English.

on 02024-05-03#vanlife #Al-Mundo-con-el-Mate #pricing of the stuff for their motorhome conversion. Demonstrates some of the techniques they used: pop-riveting wooden stringers to the van’s steel rafters, varnishing knotty softwood while kneeling on cardboard, etc. They said they planned the whole thing for five years. Or maybe three. This #video is a waste of time, a guy talking to the camera interspersed with shitty stock footage. Fortunately the costs he provides are converted to dollars, and using the blue dollar rather than the official one. The van itself runs about US$31k–US$42k, I think (though he doesn’t say), but the conversion involved electrical installation (US$2900), water and gas plumbing (US$3164 including, for some reason, the fridge and air conditioner and maybe the stove?), and the building stuff (US$500, including wood, insulation, etc.), and they also had to buy tools (US$340), plus paint and screws. The electrical installation involved two humongous 275-amp-hour batteries, an MPPT solar charge controller (“Epever” brand?), a 40-amp battery charger, and a 1500-watt inverter. They did actually put a tiny bit of fiberglass and polyethylene foam insulation in, contrary to my previous speculations, but we’re mostly talking about millimeters of insulation, not centimeters. As I speculated, almost all the interior is wood, but it’s not pine as I’d thought, but the super-lightweight kiri (Paulownia tomentosa), technically a hardwood but extremely fast-growing and abundantly produced in Misiones. The two of them spent three months working on it.

He got a US$5 32oz. polycarbonate (?) water bottle (make and model not disclosed). Also US$12 “Hyper Tough” brand gloves. Also US$5 “Equate” brand 85-item first aid kit. Also a US$20 “Stanley Venture Pot”, a single-walled stainless pot for cooking over a fire, into which you can nest a small butane camping fuel canister (from REI, not sold at Walmart), and which nests into the cheap (#pricing, make, and model not disclosed) stainless nesting cup. The “Venture Pot” also comes with two nesting foam coffee cups. He got a US$12 “Ozark Trail” brand (Walmart’s house brand) gas camping stove burner with a piezo igniter (model 31408, now US$15) to cook over the fuel canister, which acts rather like a blowtorch actually, suggesting propane in the can. His dishes are an “Uco” brand “mess kit”, because I guess he really likes military fantasies, model and price not disclosed, which has a hermetic gasket. He got dried (?) pulled pork and Maruchan ramen, too. He got “Koogwans” (?) brand aluminum Y-stakes (model and price not disclosed) to hold down a tent. At the end of 02018, when the cartel was announced at Davos, the prices were 0.19 euros per watt peak for “Low Cost” modules; 0.27 for “Mainstream”; and 0.36 for “High Efficiency”. At the end of 02022, four years later, we see 0.22 for “Low Cost”; 0.31 for “Mainstream”; and 0.41 for “High Efficiency”. Each of the last few months has set a new low-price record; now we’re at 0.11 for “Low Cost”; 0.19 for “Mainstream”; and 0.27 for “High Efficiency” so prices for the low-cost category are half of what they were at the end of last year, and 42% lower than they’ve ever been before.
