The taxonomy separates bounded self-refinement -- convergent, evaluable, and industrial practice -- from open-ended recursive self-improvement (RSI), which remains bounded by grounding requirements, collapse dynamics, and compute constraints on every measured axis. Its distinctive feature is a dedicated category for self-evaluation: every improvement loop is a claim that some signal can substitute for human judgment.” 44 pages. #toread

The multiplier (“PMU”) was a 28-pin DIP, the divider (“PDU”) was another 28-pin DIP, the “special logic [functional] unit” was another 28-pin DIP, and the “steering unit” (of which there were three, one for each of the previous three modules) was another 28-pin DIP, and there were 19 vertical-microcode ROM chips: “Each functional unit is controlled by its own micro-instruction ROM.” To me it sounds like there were at most three CPUs, each consisting of a steering unit and either a multiplier, a divider, or a “special logic unit”, and maybe just one CPU split across 25 chips; when the paper uses the term “CPU”, it seems to be referring to all of these functional units together and perhaps the ROMs as well, not just one of them.
Moreover, the multiplier and divider just blindly did a multiply and, respectively, a divide, every “frame”. Only the “special logic function” could do “Conditional, and Unconditional data branching”. And all three “functional units” were controlled by some control bits from the “system executive control”, a group of ROM chips.
The “steering unit” was a “three channel serial digital data multiplexer” with three outputs which could add or subtract data under the control of part of the instruction word on its way to the PMU, PDU, or SLF.
It seems like the program counter, or rather counters, were located in the microcode ROM chips, which could increment them or reset or reload them under the control of some control lines. #hardware #architecture #history

My radio has about a hundred various components, such as resistors, capacitors, and transistors, which is comparable to the number of molecules in a reasonably complex signal transduction pathway. I started to contemplate how biologists would determine why my radio does not work and how they would attempt to repair it. Because a majority of biologists pay little attention to physics, I had to assume that all we would know about the radio is that it is a box that is supposed to play music.”

Abstract: We describe linear-time algorithms for solving a class of problems that involve transforming a cost function on a grid using spatial information. These problems can be viewed as a generalization of classical distance transforms of binary images, where the binary image is replaced by an arbitrary function on a grid. Alternatively they can be viewed in terms of the minimum convolution of two functions, which is an important operation in grayscale morphology. A consequence of our techniques is a simple and fast method for computing the Euclidean distance transform of a binary image. Our algorithms are also applicable to Viterbi decoding, belief propagation, and optimal control.

This paper highlights an important source of variation among college graduates: studying different academic fields has sizable effects on their political attitudes. Using surveys of about 300,000 students across 500 U.S. colleges, we find several results. First, relative to natural sciences, studying social sciences and humanities makes students more left-leaning, whereas studying economics and business makes them more right-leaning. Second, the rightward effects of economics and business are driven by positions on economic issues, whereas the leftward effects of humanities and social sciences are driven by cultural ones. Third, these effects extend to behavior: humanities and social sciences increase activism, while economics and business increase the emphasis on financial success. Fourth, the effects operate through academic content and teaching rather than socialization or earnings expectations. Finally, the implications are substantial.” #toread #politics

For example, people have automated how they tie their shoelaces or how they stand up from sitting in a chair. When performance has reached this level of automaticity and effortless execution, additional experience will not improve the accuracy of behavior nor refine the structure of the mediating mechanisms, and consequently, the amount of accumulated experience will not be related to higher levels of performance.
In direct contrast, aspiring experts continues to improve their performance as a function of more experience because it is coupled with DP. The key challenge for aspiring expert performers is to avoid the arrested development associated with automaticity. These individuals purposefully counteract tendencies toward automaticity by actively setting new goals and higher performance standards, which require them to increase speed, accuracy, and control over their actions, as is shown in the upper arm of Figure 3. The experts deliberately construct and seek out training situations to attain desired goals that exceed their current level of reliable performance.”

Between 200 and 240 °C, levels of C18:2 t (0.05% increase per 10 °C rise in temperature, 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.05%), C18:3t (0.18%, 95% CI: 0.14 to 0.21%), and total TFA (0.38%, 95% CI: 0.20 to 0.55%) increased with temperature. A further increase in total TFA was observed with prolonged heating between 200 and 240 °C. Our findings suggest that heating edible oils to common cooking temperatures (≤200 °C) has minimal effect on TFA generation whereas heating to higher temperatures can increase TFA level.” PMCID PMC9002916, PMID 35406103, DOI 10.3390/nu14071489.
on 02024-08-03#IMF Working #Paper No. 2024/085, on #Bitcoin cross-border flows. “The magnitudes of the estimated Bitcoin cross-border flows are sizeable with respect to several countries’ GDP, especially in those which experience relatively small capital flows. (...) Graf von Luckner et al. (...) find that Bitcoin has become an increasingly important channel to send remittances and evade capital controls in emerging markets [poor countries]. (...) LocalBitcoins flows are smaller in magnitude, reflecting that they capture transactions from a single exchange only. They can still be sizeable, however, for some countries with the upper quartile ranging from 0–1.7 percent of GDP on average over 2017–2022. It is worth noting that the distribution of Bitcoin cross-border flows is skewed to the right with the Seychelles registering the largest Chainalysis inflows of 2.5 percent of GDP followed by Venezuela with 0.8 percent of GDP and Moldova with 0.7 percent of GDP on average over 2019-2022. (...) As highlighted by IMF (2023a), policymakers aiming to manage capital flows should ensure that capital flow management regulations cover crypto assets. From a more structural perspective, it is certainly also important to address the [underlying] imbalances which manifest in exchange rate pressures, since the usage of crypto assets would represent just symptoms of the imbalances.” #toread

on 02024-05-03#CC #paper describes various excavation methods (plasma, foam injection, etc.) including #expanding-grout, which it says works by hydrating lime under confinement and also producing ettringite, but lists four different types: type K (4CaO·3Al₂O₃·SO₃ + 8CaSO₄⋅H₂O + 6Ca(OH)₂ + 74H₂0 → 3(3CaO⋅Al₂O₃⋅3 CaSO₄⋅32H₂O, can be enhanced with silica fume and plasticizer), type M (CaO⋅Al₂O₃ + 3CaSO₄⋅H₂O + 2Ca(OH)₂ + 24H₂O → 3CaO⋅Al₂O₃⋅3CaSO₄⋅32H₂O), type S (3CaO⋅Al₂O₃ + 3CaSO₄⋅H₂O + 26H₂O → 3CaO⋅Al₂O₃⋅3CaSO₄⋅32H₂O), and class [sic] G (CaO + H₂O → Ca(OH)₂). Calls it “SCDA” and mentions ASTM C 845 “Standard Specification for Expansive Hydraulic Cement”. It says they work too slowly (12h) to replace explosives in the usual mining cycle, but I suspect that’s not true of class G, where the main problem is keeping it from reacting to completion before you can pour it into the hole.
on 02024-05-03#PDF #paper on #expanding-grout from 02009: “Expansive Cements and Soundless Chemical Demolition Agents: State-of-Technology Review” by Huynh and Laefer, using the term “soundless chemical demolition agents”, or “SCDAs”, which says ettringite formation is the main mechanism. Lists brands including Prostar, CrackAG, Chemshine, Buster, and Dexpan.
on 02024-05-03“The use of expansive chemical agents for concrete demolition: Example of practical design and application” says #expanding-grout is CaO, SiO₂, Al₂O₃, MgO, and SO₃, which last is obviously an error; it says, “They expand due to the exothermic reaction between CaO and H₂O. … Additional pressure can also be created by ettringite formation.” Ettringite (Ca₆Al₂(SO₄)₃(OH)₁₂·26H₂O) can form in portland cement from the reaction of alabaster with tricalcium aluminate, and a thin layer of ettringite is what makes portland cement have a usably long pot life #paper

Abstract: “Political actors, including voters, activists, and leaders, are often ignorant of basic facts relevant to policy choices. Even experts have little understanding of the working of society and little ability to predict future outcomes. Only the most simple and uncontroversial political claims can be counted on. This is partly because political knowledge is very difficult to attain, and partly because individuals are not sufficiently motivated to attain it. As a result, the best advice for political actors is very often to simply stop trying to solve social problems, since interventions not based on precise understanding are likely to do more harm than good.”

on 02020-12-24this #paper reports on production of #graphite, normally made by the Acheson Process (heating amorphous carbon at 3000°). They achieved almost complete or complete #graphitization (the paper repeatedly contradicts itself on this point) in 5 minutes by microwave-heating activated charcoal (mesh 100–325, 600–1500 m²/g) to 1000° after ethanol-impregnating it with 6 mmol NiCl₂ (per gram of carbon, mysteriously resulting in 15–35% wt% Ni), which produces a metallic nickel catalyst which can dissolve a little carbon (2.7% at 1327°), which then precipitates as graphite. They did this under argon in a quartz reactor over total processing times of 35–60' to allow 30' to heat up to 1000°. They report that microwaves’ penetration depth into graphite is only a few microns. They report both that the Acheson process takes two weeks and that they achieved full graphitization by heating various feedstocks to 3000° without catalyst for a few minutes. #materials

However, their proposed element separation cycle is a bit more complex than that would suggest. Does this really imply that you can smelt aluminum by heating alumina above 2200° inside charred bread? They still only support about 100k IOPS though (or 400k for sequential or read-only workloads). and they still cost 25× as much as spinning rust #disks. (The massive Flash storage speed advantage is basically how #Fastly works.) It argues that now optimizing cost-performance requires us to be willing to let CPUs idle in order to keep the Flash beast fed, not vice versa, since the cost of the Flash rather than the CPU now drives the overall cost of the system. So, for example, maybe you should busywait on your Flash instead of using interrupts.

on 02015-09-01#paper on the “consistent overhead byte stuffing” #encoding algorithm ("COBS"), which encodes your packets to avoid an illegal byte value adding no more than 0.4% space overhead in the worst case. If the illegal value is NUL, it works by transforming a packet that is a sequence of NUL-terminated strings into a sequence of length-byte-preceded strings, with an excess-1 encoding for the length; strings of over 254 bytes are encoded by a concatenation of 255-byte chunks counted with 0xFF, followed by a regular counted chunk. #algorithms

on 02015-08-15#paper on #gelcasting #alumina and zirconia #ceramics #materials with #gelatin and polyethylene spheres to add porosity. Presumably you could use paraffin spheres too, which would be cheaper and maybe improve thixotropy. Something somewhat hydrophilic, not easily water-soluble, and burnable-out might work better still. (Lecithin?)
on 02015-08-15Galip Sarper Koçlar’s master’s thesis #paper on #gelcasting of #alumina #ceramics #materials with #gelatin and #carrageenan gum. He got best results with 5% by weight gelatin, or 1.7% by weight carrageenan, which resulted in significantly lower fired hardness but higher fired compressive strength than the gelatin, and all his trials were with 47–53% alumina, which reached 95.8% after firing at 1550°, and a bit of Dolapix dispersant. 17.5% linear shrinkage. In English, not Turkish, although it’s kind of broken English. The introduction has the best #survey of gelcasting I’ve found so far. Apparently #acrylamide (and, I guess, other similar binders) needs 30–60 minutes to gel in the mold. He also mentions existing “natural gelcasting” processes for technical ceramics using “starch, ovalbumin, chitosan, alginades [sic; should be #alginate], #gelatin, carragenan [sic] gum and [sic] etc.”, and agarose, with the disadvantage being lower green strength.
on 02015-08-15A survey #paper of #parallel #prefix-sum #algorithms, finding that the Kogge-Stone algorithm is more common in #GPGPU code than Blelloch’s, and with handy diagrams so you can see what they’re talking about! Seems to be some tweaks to the #prefix-sum thing Blelloch mentioned in his 1993 #paper, which they call “enumerative computation”? These algorithms are probably crucial to speeding up #CSV parsing.
on 02015-08-15“Prefix Sums and Their Applications”, Blelloch 93. This is the definitive #paper on #prefix-sum #algorithms as of uh 22 years ago. It mentions specifically a #regular-expression #search-engine and #lexing as two of the applications of prefix sum! I think the “parallel solution of recurrence problems” mentioned here can be applied to #DSP IIR filtering. This is just “Chapter 1” (of what, I have no idea), but it promises more meat in chapters 2, 3, and 4, mostly to do with linked lists and trees.

Similar mechanical behavior has been recently artificially engineered in #metamaterials by drawing on the #Braess paradox ... the mean-field type coupling in such materials is achieved via parallel connections with multiple shared links.” The references given are Cohen & Horowitz 1991 (the paper with the springs and strings) and Nicolaou and Motter 2012 in “Nat Mater”, which I guess is “Mechanical metamaterials with negative compressibility transitions” in Nature Materials.
on 02015-08-14a #paper on mechanical and electrical analogs of #Braess’s paradox, using zeners in the electrical case. Has a clear explanation of the mechanical version of the system; it depends only on the nonlinear stress-strain behavior of buckling string. (String! Not springs!) The fixed maximum length of the string corresponds to the fixed maximum voltage of the zener. On p.700 (the second page) there’s a diagram showing something like a negative-#stiffness region in this network! Also explains that nonlinearity is necessary to produce this effect, and gives a hydraulic analogue as well.
on 02015-08-14A #paper on a numerically-simulated analog of the #Braess paradox in mesoscopic (? quantum-phase-coherent?) #semiconductor networks: “adding a third branch can paradoxically induce transport inefficiency that manifests itself in a sizable conductance drop of the network.” This is less interesting now that I understand Cohen & Horowitz 1991.
