#video #toread on #survivalists using #JS8call for #QRP #radio on HF bands. Mentions that NVIS is difficult to direction-find. Demonstrates his in-attic dipole antenna for the 40-meter band to avoid the specter of the HOA. A lot of talking-head filler but I think under 50%. Later on he has a screencast of using the JS8Call software on 7.078MHz.

Possibly of interest to #survivalists or for #space, if true: an easy way to use seeds and (possibly recycled) water to make vitamin C.
on 02026-04-16#video of surviving for 5 days on a desert island (no source of fresh water) without bringing food or water. Unfortunately Madison Clysdale doesn’t know the #bushcraft of how to climb a coconut tree, so she’s struggling with hydration the whole time, drinking out of partly-full PET drinking-water bottles that wash up as flotsam. #survivalists

on 02025-12-04#survivalists #video on how the authorities can requisition electrical generators, etc., in emergencies, so you should hide them. Also firearms (as in Katrina), medications (he suggests buying fish antibiotics) and medical supplies (like insulin, antibiotics, and analgesics), food and water, stored gasoline, propane tanks, battery banks, communication equipment, tools and hardware like chainsaws and water purification systems, and finally, preparedness information. Seems like a stock-footage filler video with an AI-slop script, so I’m not going to finish watching.

on 02024-11-05#video by #survivalists on #USA FEMA recommendations for items to keep on hand: drinking water (4ℓ/person/day), food, emergency radio (and batteries), first aid kit, dust mask (!), flashlight (and batteries), a whistle, plastic sheeting and duct tape, moist towelettes, garbage bags for pooping, and plastic ties, wrench and pliers to turn off utilities, a can opener, a local map (on paper). This is from March 02020, so it represents a pre-COVID or early-COVID perspective. The talking head filler dude also recommends small-denomination cash (for power outages when stores are still open), a portable water filtration system, rubber gloves, and a propane camping stove.

Recommending, before the election: get cash out of the bank, make sure your gas tanks are full, develop a family communications plan, stock up on groceries, do urban errands early, stock up on ammunition, try shutting off your main breaker for a few days to test how you’d handle a power outage, get to know your neighbors, charge up all your devices. Just video of some jackass named #MagicPrepper talking to a camera on a shooting range.

on 02024-11-05#video by #survivalists on portable solar power stations, mostly talking-head filler, although he does show some of them. Says many are fraudulently sold as “solar generators” and also use shitty lead-acid batteries, but that in “the last couple of years” (02023–4) they’ve “really taken off”. There’s a nice data table at 12'34" of cost per watt hour, ranging from 49–51¢ (Eco Play, SolarPlay) to US$1.21–1.22 (Anker, Bluetti). I don’t think he’s tested all the units in the table, though; he’s just using their advertised capacity.

on 02024-11-05#video by #survivalists reflecting on Hurricane Helene: what was valuable was having a small 2kW gasoline generator, having chainsaws for the fallen trees, having oil and spare chains for the chainsaws, having a lot of gasoline stored up for the generator and chainsaws, having cash on hand (especially small-denomination bills like US$5–20), having a small propane cookstove (with propane, ideally in 20-“pound” canisters, from which you can refill your small one), have a water reserve and a way to filter it (like a LifeStraw), have lots of lighting (flashlights, lanterns, enough to give to neighbors), keep a Crockpot full of hot water next to your sink to provide you with hot water for washing dishes (which also can reheat food in mason jars), watch BBC farm series like Victorian Farm and Tudor Monastery Farm to get ideas, have a way to do laundry (he had his kids stabbing a tub of laundry with a wooden stick, and wringing it with a mangle), have fast-charging portable power stations or battery packs, which they used to keep their neighbors’ freezers going, and have compassion. In his area SMS would go through from time to time.
on 02024-11-04#stealth-camping in the city #video. Full of ultra-right-wing propaganda, misinformation (starting with “over 80% of the population of the world lives in a [sic] urban environment” at 1'16”) and talking-head filler. Also the guy tries to use bigger words to sound more important, but isn’t very clear on what those words actually mean, so he ends up misusing them, making him sound like a policeman and making the video harder to understand. Unsurprisingly there’s also a bunch of soldier cosplay and ammunition ads, followed by a lot of bragging about how great they are. Finally they start talking about the actual topic around 6'00", but it turns out they’re talking about how to run away from the police, not how to stealth camp. It's 100% talking-head filler for the first 7 minutes, but then after he demonstrates taking off his shirt and walking down an alley, we’re back to talking-head filler. At 11 minutes they’re recommending mesh networks, but again, just talking to a camera about them. Finally at 19'19” the #survivalists start trying to demonstrate how to improvise a charcoal filter for water, in case you’re in a city whose water has been cut off by a natural disaster, but they don’t actually finish it. Some potentially effective suggestions: collect dew from short grass with clean socks tied around your ankles, sleep in shifts so there’s always someone on watch, sleep in parks or under bridges with hobos, steal their clothing, beg facemasks from protestors, eat food out of the garbage, maybe cook food with citric acid, eat insects, and you can go two weeks without eating. A less effective suggestion is to try to cut rotten meat off of steaks to eat the non-rotten part.
