CRIU implements checkpoint-and-restore functionality for #Linux in userspace. It works as long as your tasks aren’t running under a debugger, don’t have device files open, aren’t running in i386 mode on an amd64 platform, aren’t using X11 (!!), aren’t using sockets “other than TCP, UDP, UNIX, packet and netlink”, or a couple of other things. The #checkpointing facilities it needs are integrated into the mainline kernel since 3.11.

the Ashkelon #desalination plant in (since?) 2005 produced 127M m³ (127Gℓ); Hadera, 2009, 140M m³ (140Gℓ); Sorek, now, 150M m³ (150 Gℓ); #Israel total 600M m³ (600 Gℓ) per year (19 kℓ/second), of a total required 1.9G m³ (1.9 Tℓ) per year (60 kℓ/second), of which Israel previously (pre-2008?) got 1.5G m³/year (1.5 Tℓ/year, 48kℓ/s). All #reverse-osmosis; Sorek uses 70 atmospheres (7.1 MPa). Israel now gets 55% of domestic water from desal (which I guess means there’s another 14 kℓ/s unaccounted for in the above figures) and recycles 86% of (residential?) wastewater for #irrigation. Sorek produces drinking water at US$0.58/kℓ (US$580/Mℓ), which is about three times the cost of the mechanical energy.
