on 02026-04-25text #editors on #multitouch #cellphones have terrible #UX problems with finger occlusion, constant user error, undiscoverable UI, etc. Based on his research on "Eloquent". “Android and iOS share a common problem: they copied desktop text editing conventions, but without a menu bar or mouse. This forced them to overload the tap gesture with a wide range of actions: placing the cursor, moving it, selecting text, and invoking a pop-up menu. This results in an overly complicated and ambiguous mess-o-taps, leading to a variety of user errors.” #toread

The provided Markdown file thereof is 1204076 bytes, and according to my memcpycost.c, memcpy of such a size of thing on my old 2.4GHz Pentium N3700 would cost about 600 microseconds on one core and about 300 microseconds of memory bandwidth. On my Ryzen 5 3500U we should be talking about 120μs.

on 02023-06-22Maxime Coste explains #Kakoune's #UX design. “I have been working, for the last 5 years, on a new modal editor called Kakoune. It first started as a reimplementation of Vim (the most popular vi clone) whose source code is quite dated. But, I soon realized that we could improve a lot on vi editing model.” The page has a bunch of tiny looping WebP videos to demonstrate particular UI features, which I think are silent. It feels close enough to vi to be almost usable without an extensive training period, and its multiple selection stuff seems better. #editors
