(Liangbing Hu) in 02018 is to boil it with 2.5M lye and 0.4M sodium sulfite for 7 hours before densifying it with 5MPa for “about a day”, removing optimally 45% of the lignin to permit better compacting. He had to keep checking the pH when rinsing the wood to find out when he’d removed all the lye, which took 7 (one-hour?) washings. The result was not bulletproof at all the first time around, not stopping even a pellet. Later iterations improved somewhat but still yielded to .22 LR, though with two layers glued together and rotated 90°, the bullet was stopped. Three layers didn’t even splinter on the back side and was able to stop a 9mm bullet.

The wooden bulkhead between the van compartment and the driver compartment, covered in carpet affixed with spray adhesive, has a hidden bifold door in it. His diesel heater exhaust pipe, installed under the driver’s seat, hangs down under the van to avoid conspicuous wall chimneys. He uses a portable “power station” from “Bluetti” for the electrical part, installed protruding through the bulkhead behind the passenger seat. The convertible bed/couches are CNC-routed from 19mm (?) plywood by Contour Campervan Furniture. Electric 12V Yeti fridge, Dometic two-burner gas stove fed from a tiny Coleman camping propane/butane cylinder. Total cost, including van purchase, £11350, of which £6850 is the conversion cost. The toilet looks to be a Porta Potti brand cartridge toilet stored under the bed. He used very small CCTV surveillance cameras painted black on the sides of the roof rack so they wouldn’t be noticeable.
