#video #toread on Godot multiplayer P2P on Steam. Unfortunately it’s by #BatteryAcidDev, and so I expect the video to be half talking head footage, so I may try to see if there’s a better video about this. #todelete
#vanlife #video about how their year has been a nightmare. They call it “Mr. Lemon” and paid US$100k for it. Their alternator burned up. The skylight would not seal and blew open when they were driving. The electrical system extending the vinyl awning broke. They had to buy a spare tire. They mention that being able to connect external propane appliances to the van’s propane tank has been useful. They like having swivel chairs for front seats. They also like having added a backup camera and a front camera with a memory card. I gave up watching after 9 out of 28 minutes.
#video about the demise of the 60-meter-long La Serenísima blimp, which was shot several times with a .45 by someone in Fuerte Apache, and then several more times with a FAL rifle in Córdoba, but continued flying until destroyed by a storm in General Rodríguez near Rosario. 95% fake by "Real 3D". #Plonk #Argentina
#video about #energy-storage in phase-change materials, especially for hot water heaters such as the Thermino from Scottish company Sunamp; they run rectangular coils of brass pipes through a rectangular tank of an unspecified phase-change material; one £1945 model delivers 2.8kW to 15ℓ/minute of water, a price that increases to £3245 when installation is included. They advertise it as a “heat battery”. And Phase Change Solutions sells an “ENRG blanket” with quilted aluminized unspecified polymer encapsulating an unspecified “BioPCM” which has been installed in 1000 commercial buildings; it looks like it’s about a centimeter thick but costs US$4.50 per “square foot”, which would be US$48/m² in modern units and probably on the order of US$5/kg, which is about 100× more expensive than the raw materials. QE Platinum is a competing company and product. Apparently the PCM energy storage market is already half a billion dollars a year. Unfortunately this video is entirely talking-head filler and stock footage. Shame on you, #Undecided. #energy

#video by #Retsetman about "pericyclic" #mechanical transmission, which looks like a strain-wave gear without the strain, instead nutating because the barrel-shaped gear can spin freely on a part of the shaft that’s ground (well, 3-D printed in this case) with its axis at a 4° angle to the shaft’s own axis of rotation. Four moving parts to get 409.5:1 reduction, or six to correct for vibration. It’s apparently too inefficient to be backdrivable at least in its plastic incarnation. The 409.5:1 version is differential: each rotation, the nutating gear rotates the output shaft one 8.37° step forward, while rotating backwards one 9.23° step with respect to the fixed gear, which I guess means they’re 43 and 39 teeth respectively. It seems to have a lot of backlash or something though. The video contains erroneous statements about spur #gears. With the gear profile he’s chosen (some kind of involute-like tooth profile, which may be responsible for the backlash), he gets a slip-clutch effect which he considers a defect but which is a great advantage in some situations.
#video about bladeless water turbine. Way too much talking head footage and too much stock footage. But the principle is clear: water speeds up when spiraling down a drain, and you can harness that rotation through drag. He claims it has lower LCoE than solar because you don’t need any storage. #energy
#video about an “atmosphere powered battery” (like the Atmos clock, I thought, but it looks like he’s just using vacuum as a constant-force spring). The only interesting part about this is installing rubber syringe gaskets and transparent plexiglas tubes on a chassis made by #3D-printing. He ended up having to sandwich the syringe gasket between 3-D printed parts (with screws I guess) to keep it from popping off. Okay, maybe using cut timing belts as cables for power transfer is cool too. But basically I think this is dumb. Then he has a kind of cringey plug for PCBWay’s CNC services. Unfortunately the desktop-sized “battery” has an energy capacity of only 628 joules at about 10 watts, with what he said was 73% efficiency. My math: 1 atmosphere times 500mm (est.) per cylinder times circlearea(half 36mm) gives 412 joules. So maybe his cylinders are a little taller than I thought but basically it’s what you’d expect. #mechanical #energy

#PDF slides on #pericyclic #gears for NASA. Uses straight-faced gear tooth profiles like a rack (I mean, a rack designed for interfacing with involute spur gears), which seems like it would be better than Retsetman’s toothform; they used #3D-printing in 17-4 PH stainless for the prototype. “Competitive with harmonic gears for Mars 2020 application investigated.”
#CNC-Kitchen #video on injection molding with #3D-printing (SLA for molds, and abusing the FDM nozzle to inject PLA into it). The SLA resin is glass-fiber reinforced and quite stiff. At first he didn’t preheat it, but started trying that in order to get the plastic to fill the mold. He finally had success by using a faster-injecting hotend, that time without preheating the mold. To be able to demold a cast with some undercuts, he made it in thermoplastic urethane (TPU) instead of PLA, which worked much better
#video on how to design #flexures for #3D-printing. Unfortunately it’s pretty much just the same Snijlab living hinges and BYU CMR #mechanical things everyone makes, though BubsBuilds designed a flexure fractal vise. Recommends using nylon for FDM because it’s less vulnerable to fatigue than PLA, or PETG if nylon is too hard to print. Also make sure your slicer doesn’t position layer seams in the flexure blades, or change the number of perimeters there. Also you can adjust flexibility by changing the number of perimeters, i.e., “wall loops”. He also points out that short blades are more demanding and that you should use fillets.

a simple library to add lines to a 3-D display for #graphics debugging in #Godot, which works in Godot 4
a more manual way to add lines to a 3-D display for #graphics debugging in #Godot is to add a CanvasLayer with a Control and override the Control’s _draw method to use $Camera3D.unproject_position; I suspect you can still do this in Godot 4
