this #lead-acid battery (model Trojan 27TMX) stores supposedly 105 amp-hours of #energy at 12 volts, but really more like 73 amp-hours, which works out to 880 watt-hours or 3.2 MJ; it can manage 530 amps at 0°. It weighs 25 kg and costs AR$5100, about US$340, giving about 9.3 kJ/US$ or reciprocally US$108/MJ. Although this is more than twice the cost in the US, it’s still a bearable cost. The battery lifetime is given as 750 full charges.

A 250-watt peak #solar #photovoltaic #energy panel costs AR$7000 (=US$467) now here. That’s US$1.87 per watt, which is almost four times what such modules supposedly cost in bulk. The brand is “Luxen”. 20kg, 1640mm × 992 mm × 40mm, suggesting about 15% efficiency. #pricing
Even in the US, #solar #photovoltaic #energy panel #pricing is US$370 for a 265-watt panel, US$1.40 per watt. This uses 19%-efficient cells.

“The Other #Turing Machine”, on the Turing-designed #Pilot-ACE, the world’s fastest computer from 1952 to 1957. Binary, two’s-complement, software floating-point, with 1024 tanks (though the Pilot version only had 32 I think?) of 32 32-bit “minor cycles”, plus six temporary storage tanks. PC was called “instruction number” or “current data”; PUSH and POP were BURY and UNBURY subroutines (and UNBURY was actually RET); planned to do two multiplications to implement a conditional branch; ALU is “central arithmetic organ”; subroutines are “groups” and programs are “instruction tables”. It’s kind of amazing that Turing in 1945 had already thought up subroutine libraries, linkers, and just-in-time compilation. By the time of the Pilot, there was a conditional-skip instruction, and “the return-address stack was abandoned.”. #hardware #ISA #history
