#pdf #paper on Gabor analysis for #DSP image processing. Shows what looks like a reasonable if blurry reconstruction of a zebra image on p.77 (91 of 123) from 0.75% of the Gabor coefficients. GPL implementations in Matlab in the appendix.
“Non-volatile storage: Implications of the Datacenter’s Shifting Center”, an ACM Queue #paper claiming that now #Flash “storage-class memories” of US$3000 to US$5000, such as NVDIMMs, provide durable #memory #hardware that is fast enough to saturate one or more fast CPUs, thus invalidating the assumptions that have underlain our memory hierarchy designs in computer systems ever since semiconductor RAM beat out ferrite cores in the early 1970s. They still only support about 100k IOPS though (or 400k for sequential or read-only workloads). and they still cost 25× as much as spinning rust #disks. (The massive Flash storage speed advantage is basically how #Fastly works.) It argues that now optimizing cost-performance requires us to be willing to let CPUs idle in order to keep the Flash beast fed, not vice versa, since the cost of the Flash rather than the CPU now drives the overall cost of the system. So, for example, maybe you should busywait on your Flash instead of using interrupts.
“SPHINCS-256 is a high-security #post-quantum stateless hash-based signature scheme that signs hundreds of messages per second on a modern 4-core 3.5GHz Intel CPU. Signatures are 41 KB, public keys are 1 KB, and private keys are 1 KB. SPHINCS-256 is designed to provide long-term 2128 security even against attackers equipped with quantum computers.” #djb #crypto #algorithms
this is why I so strongly reject the anti-well-actually rule of the Recurse Center. “The reason these responses are seen as good-faith participation is because this model of communication emphasizes harmonious emotional experience. The responses that don’t attempt to establish emotional rapport are merely coming from a different context, one in which communication is about information sharing.”
another blog post about different communication habits from someone who doesn’t enjoy discussing math with mathematicians because she doesn’t feel comfortable when they correct or question her because she’s too traumatized by social dominance games. “It’s not that my friends had terrible intentions. Nobody was mean to me, nobody consciously laughed at me. There’s just a way that mathematicians have been socialized (I guess?!) to interact with each other that I find oppressive.”

“Open Labware: 3-D Printing Your Own Lab Equipment” is a bit of a disappointment since 3D-printing most labware isn’t yet practical. But it’s a good overview of what is practical at this point.
