a pretty floating #desalination plant conceptual design with somewhat subpar efficiency
on 02017-04-15#Australia has such high vegetable prices that it’s likely profitable to build Sundrop Farm, a US$200M plant using #solar #desalination of seawater for desert #agriculture
on 02016-10-07Edo Bar-Zeev’s #paper about prefiltering for #desalination to prevent bacterial #biofouling, using a tuff bioflocculator to grow bacteria to flocculate debris, followed by a mixed-media bed filter.
on 02016-08-01I commented on the #Israel #desalination article.
on 02016-08-01original #Israel #desalination story. Edo Bar-Zeev and colleagues solved #biofouling problems by prefiltering with “porous lava stone”, which turns out to be tuff, not lava at all. #Water shortage seeded the #Syria conflict. #politics
on 02016-08-01the Ashkelon #desalination plant in (since?) 2005 produced 127M m³ (127Gℓ); Hadera, 2009, 140M m³ (140Gℓ); Sorek, now, 150M m³ (150 Gℓ); #Israel total 600M m³ (600 Gℓ) per year (19 kℓ/second), of a total required 1.9G m³ (1.9 Tℓ) per year (60 kℓ/second), of which Israel previously (pre-2008?) got 1.5G m³/year (1.5 Tℓ/year, 48kℓ/s). All #reverse-osmosis; Sorek uses 70 atmospheres (7.1 MPa). Israel now gets 55% of domestic water from desal (which I guess means there’s another 14 kℓ/s unaccounted for in the above figures) and recycles 86% of (residential?) wastewater for #irrigation. Sorek produces drinking water at US$0.58/kℓ (US$580/Mℓ), which is about three times the cost of the mechanical energy.
