trying to popularize #responsivity and teach people about #latency: “You’ve probably come across a website where scrolling stutters now and then, a button responds slightly late, or the letters you type into a search box show up half a beat behind. It isn’t bad enough to be annoying, but it gets on your nerves in a subtle way. That kind of jank is what a blocked main thread looks like. (...) web performance metrics. INP (Interaction to Next Paint), which measures how long it takes for the screen to respond after the user does something, and TBT (Total Blocking Time), which measures the total time the main thread was blocked during page load”

#Video from #Tr3bol Argentina about how in #electronics you often see badly-designed off-the-shelf step-up and step-down dc-dc converter modules built around LM2596 or XL4015 #hardware for buck converters, or the 1.2MHz ML3608 (which she doesn’t recommend using) for boost converters, and how you ought to really just build your own to make sure it works. She says they’re noisy (though I notice she didn’t bother to specify the volts per division on her oscilloscope still photo, but later she said it was 140mV ripple, while her own design got the ripple down to 60mV) and that you can accidentally set the voltage wrong, or vibrate or heat your potentiometer to the wrong voltage (in the schematic she shows, it isn’t ratiometric, so you have temperature drift). Also, humidity. Also, often, she says the commercial module PCBs are badly laid out, creating EMI problems and not respecting safety standards, use counterfeit chips, and are inadequately heatsinked. Most of the video is just still photos with lots of talking-head filler.

People on the EEVblog forum in 02021 reported that, although #JLCPCB supports a MOQ of 5 boards for #PCBA, some of the parts they can assemble with it have a higher MOQ. “For that particular part, the minimum quantity is 15. You must pay for 15, even if they only need 5 or 10 to assemble your boards.” There’s also an “attrition” amount for some parts, which is the number of parts they lose off the tape when they cut it (and you pay for). #electronics #hardware #manufacturing
#Video by #Eurocircuits about #manufacturing 4-layer PCBs. They do PCB manufacturing, specialized in small prototype runs, but I don’t think they do PCBA like Aisler, JLC, or PCBWay. They do “order pooling” like JLC: they put multiple customers’ designs into a single panel. #toread #electronics #hardware

#JLCPCB blocked a Russian guy’s #PCBA orders after he moved to Serbia because of “compliance”; a Redditor speculates, “It seems that you've been thrown into the middle of US sanctions on Russia. Specifically, the US is interested in shutting down third-party persons who might import goods that further war efforts, including electronic assemblies and notable semiconductors.”
A few other people on the EEVBlog forums in October 02025 getting blocked by #JLCPCB “due to the compliance review failure”. Two of them report being able to switch to new (presumably Chinese) manufacturers with no problems. Also, one mentions #Aisler, and that Würth/WEDirekt offers #PCBA, but is expensive at prototype quantities. People in Greece, Slovakia, Ecuador, Serbia, Australia, etc., are reporting this problem, and even the USA.
JLC says: “This adjustment was made to meet stricter compliance requirements and global trade compliance criteria, which involved reviewing and closing accounts with a history of risky IP addresses and risky activities. We sincerely apologize for the confusion and concern this has caused, and we are truly sorry for the inconvenience you have experienced.”
ZaphodBeeblebrox says that #Eurocircuits does indeed offer PCBA: “Bare board prices are high compared to Chinese manufacturers, but assembly costs are quite fine in my opinion.”
“JLC-Blacklist” (“a small business in the USA”)said on Oct. 22, “My JLC account rep emailed me this morning. I have to fill out paperwork and they may reopen my account. I haven't had a chance to look at it closely yet. I’ll check it out later at the office to see what info they want.” Earlier, on Oct. 17, they’d said, “This is a major disruption for our business that’s used jlcpcb for over five years. (...) we’ve probably spent a quarter million USD there.”
JLC-Blacklist clarified: “JLC wanted me to confirm that I do screen customers using OFAC and DPL lists. They also wanted me to confirm the PCBs will not be used in any military or space applications. That we are not part of the government. If we are owned by a parent company, who are they. That I will not export PCBs to countries outlined (N Korea, Sudan, Russia, etc). (...) I was never out of compliance for anything they asked about, so I should be in good shape to get enabled to use JLC again.”
Spirit532 and fbrozovic reported the same experience, and later (Oct. 31) Spirit532 said they’d been unblocked except for PCBA, but then later still (Nov. 5) reported that they still weren’t allowed to order PCBs.
JLC-Blacklist reported on Nov. 8 that they were “still in limbo”, and then, on Nov. 19, that they could place PCB orders again (but not PCBA). Then, on Nov. 20: “I fessed up about doing JLC ordering work while on vacation (seemed harmless). I provided the travel itinerary showing it was me on holiday which I assume matched their logs and now my JLC account has been completely restored including PCBA. / Whatever starlink IP I used was on a naughty list or had geolocation to a naughty country. So be careful about IP as they are definitely monitoring them.”
Spirit532 reported on Dec. 30, “There goes that. 30 some emails later, they finally fully refused to let me do PCBA. An absurd and arbitrary restriction, since I can order everything else.”
