The leads will be wrapped around the posts and then soldered. This provides a superior mounting for the capacitors with minimal bending of the leads coming from the caps. The alternate method used these days is to bend the leads and stick them thru the PCB, #soldering to the copper tracks. This method is a source of problems as solder has no strength in itself and the caps are heavy, meaning that vibration from use or moving the equipment often creates hairline cracks in the solder joint resulting in electrical faults. (...) Once upon a time this method was very common in electronics equipment and will still be found in high end gear designed to last.” #electronics #hardware
on 02026-04-23#video on bending and soldering #wire and thin brass tubing into literal wire frames. Mostly #soldering. Recommends cross-lock tweezers or leather gloves to hold hot metal, especially brass tubing. Stretches his copper wire to straighten it, first tying one end around a clamp attached to his workbench and winding the other around his pliers. Sands the (uninsulated, 1mm) wire before tinning it and then soldering butt joints. He laser-prints a template on paper to work from. He uses electronics flush-cutters to get flat ends on his copper wires. To avoid a blob or spike on each joint, he drags the iron away from the joint. For a thicker frame he uses brass tubing (2mm?), cut with a Dremel. To get a perfect circle you can wind the tubing around a jar or something, which gives springback, or you can use a small roll bender. To align the ends of the circle around the gap, he cuts off some welding rod with the Dremel and sticks it into the ends of the tube, so that the solder he later applies won’t have to bridge an offset. He solders the brass tubing with the same 30 or 40 watt soldering iron and the same rosin-core electronics solder, then files the solder smooth with a file. To get sharp bends in the tubing he V-notches it with the Dremel. A flap sanding wheel on the Dremel also helps to deburr the solder. Shitty elevator music.
