She says geegaz’s “Multiple-Windows-Tutorial” helped her a lot. She ended up using PhysicsPointQueryParameters2D and DisplayServer.mouse_get_position() to find out what objects her mouse was intersecting because of lots of difficulties with input management. And turning borderless off and back on again in order to get her transparent “world window” to resize properly. Finally she ended up hacking around things with C# and P/Invoke to call things in user32.dll after some help from ChatGPT.
the official announcement about #Godot removing the #visual-programming language. “Godot’s visual scripting language, #VisualScript, was introduced in Godot 3.0, almost five years ago. Despite our continuous effort, it never gained traction and the path to improve it was never clear. ... For a lot of potential users that wanted this feature, they found out GDScript was a great fit and they pretty much ended up preferring it over VisualScript. ... Another likely reason for VisualScript’s low popularity is that we failed to provide good documentation for using it. The official documentation has examples in GDScript and C#, but we never succeeded in including VisualScript examples due to technical reasons (we’d have to make screenshots of VS graphs for each example and maintaining them would prove very difficult).”

on 02024-06-02#video #tutorial on #Godot multiplayer platformer based on the Brackeys platformer tutorial. ENetMultiplayerPeer and the Godot multiplayer API looks really easy to use in the case where it’s okay to depend on a server. I didn’t know Godot’s debug menu had a “run multiple instances” submenu, and in project settings, there's a Display→Window→Always on Top option, which is very useful for debugging. The MultiplayerSpawner node automatically replicates the scenes under its spawn path across all the players in the cluster, using its auto-spawn list to figure out how to instantiate them, except that it seems like actually you have to write code to manually instantiate scenes there? Maybe only on the server? By default only the server can change any (MultiplayerSynchronizer) node that’s synchronized across clients, but it can .set_multiplayer_authority(id) on a node to allow one of the players to change it instead. The MultiplayerSynchronizer synchronizes properties of other nodes. #BatteryAcidDev’s recommendation is to only give the player authority over their inputs, not over their player’s position. Lots of talking-head filler footage. #toread

He demonstrates using the Godot UI widgets, defining new node classes in scripts, connecting signals to callbacks, getting bugs due to implicit @onready invocation, loading JSON files in the node inspector, etc., really a full Godot development tutorial. He came up with an ad-hoc ASCII textual language for writing his dialogues, including --- for page breaks within a single dialogue, which displays as a boxes-and-wires graph. It looks like it might be a little more work to use than #Dialogic, because it’s much more narrowly focused, but by the same token, maybe more flexible and easier to debug. The dialogue system supports variable interpolation and conditionals on state variables passed in from the main GDScript logic, as well as emitting “custom signals” that are handled synchronously. #games

on 02024-05-20#Godot removed VisualScript #visual-programming in Godot 4. #video Now it’s called Godot Orchestrator and is a GDExtension. One of the suggested uses is “Design complex dialogue conversations for NPCs for any game,” as in, #visual-novels. It’s literally programming by drawing flowcharts, like, 01950s style flowcharts, with arrows to indicate control flow. The main differences are that now the box corners are rounded, the arrows are curved, and there are additional arrows for dataflow. I can see why GameFromScratch said “honestly it never felt like an improvement or viable alternative to GDScript. In fact, it always felt like writing GDScript, just in a less efficient manner than typing.” It’s almost like #GRAIL.
