Two years after the Talib coup, #Pakistan announced a mass deportation to #Afghanistan as “a response to an increase in terrorist attacks in Pakistan”, and succeeded in deporting at least a quarter of the Afghan #illegal-aliens, including many born in Pakistan.

#ThisOldTony #video about toggle #mechanisms (which he keeps calling “over-center mechanisms” for some reason), with an overview of wire flip-top mechanisms, cabinet doors, toolbox latches, boot latches, barrel clamps, suspender latches, vise-grips (“locking clamps”), woodworking toggle clamps, etc. Then he segues into a discussion of living hinges (which he doesn’t name), including bistable designs. #humor

#video on how many plants you need to breathe; turns out 80 liters of Chlorella vulgaris bioreactors is enough to absorb about 90% of the CO₂ a person exhales. But this involved letting the CO₂ levels reach 3500ppm. So he added another 50 “gallons” (190 liters) of Chlorella, which stabilized the CO₂ contents in the high 2000s.
#video on bent #wire #mechanisms. He recommends using a plastic-coated clothes hanger, measuring out bend points in advance with a ruler and permanent marker, using wide-point needlenose pliers, bending entirely from one end, always putting the pliers on the same side of the bend (he’s using the side that has already-bent stuff on it), etc. The half-hour video is entirely about making a crankshaft for driving wire automata.
#video on bent #wire #cardboard #automata #mechanisms. Shows making crankshafts from galvanized steel wire with pliers, a frame bent around a plastic box using cut bicycle spokes to form loops. Shows how to loop a thinner wire around the crankshaft several turns to form a triangle to prevent the connecting rod from sliding along the shaft. Suggest using kitchen tongs (?), a square pipe, and a sort of clamp for wire bending as well. He mentions copper, “M.S.”, zinc, and solder wire. Demonstrates scribing a plastic box with a sort of improvised height gauge on a normal Formica table, and using a hot wire to puncture it. By godbolerr@gmail.com, Ravindra Godbole.

#video on 18AWG round copper #wire bending for making beautiful shapes, swirls and scrolls and stuff. Recommends sharpieing the round-nose pliers to get repeatable bend radii. “16-gauge, the loops tend to oval.” She likes to straighten her wire by pinching it between a clothespin and a piece of plywood really hard and pulling it through with pliers; alternatively she suggests clamping one end in a vise, the other end in some serrated-jaw pliers, and pulling until the wire stretches. Or, for shorter pieces, rolling it between a steel block and I guess a sheet of MDF. She recommends for finished (not practice) pieces to finish the end of the wire a little bit to be nice and smooth, using either a fine file or 400-grit sandpaper taped onto a tongue depressor, even after using a flush cutter to cut the end off flat. To make a loop she grasps the wire at the desired radius of round-nose plier, by the end of the wire (“not sticking out”), and bends it about 90° at a time before going back to get another grip, while using the other hand to pull the wire tight against the plier jaw. To make a continued spiral (“scroll” I guess) she switches to flat-nose pliers to grasp the whole loop between the jaws, with the plane of the loop parallel to the plier jaw surfaces. Demonstrates hammering the wire with a shiny and smooth hammer on a shiny and smooth steel block (because any texture will be transferred to the wire).
