on 02025-10-21#clickbait #video about upcycling (#recycling) paper into plastic-like waterproof (no! “water resistant”) #materials. The recipe is water, cornstarch (gelatinized with heat), vinegar as a preservative, coconut oil as a plasticizer, and white laser-printer bond paper, onto which the sauce is brushed with a paintbrush and then allowed to dry. For an inkjet printer, obviously that mix would make the ink bloom, so as a “great little hack”, she recommends spraying it with an unspecified sealant first (she just says “polycrylic”, which isn’t a thing). To "antique" it she suggests mixing some instant coffee into the sauce. To fix the paper curling she recommends ironing the paper in a folded silicone mat afterwards. I'm not persuaded that this is superior to silicone thinned with paint thinner.

on 02024-11-26#clickbait #video on #solar #energy claiming #China is “no longer approving” coal power plants. Talking-head filler interspersed with web-page screenshots and misleading stock footage (e.g. of concentrated solar power to illustrate a #photovoltaic plant). Claims #Australia will build an even larger solar farm than China’s at, implicitly, Crescent Dunes within the next 5 years. Claims 210 gigawatts of renewables added so far in 02024 (as of November 19, according to a Renew Energy reneweconomy.com story) of which 161GW was grid-scale solar, 39.1GW of #wind power, 7.97GW of hydroelectric, and 1.37GW of biomass, and that coal power plant approvals have fallen 80% according to Greenpeace, or that last year approvals for new coal power plants fell by 92%, or that over the first 9 months of 02024, an increase of 21% over last year; “86% of all power added to the Chinese grid was renewable energy” (unclear if peak or average). Claims that the average [residential?] solar [power] system being installed in #Australia now is 10 kilowatts. Claims that 70% of coal power plants are running at a loss, and that coal power plants need to hit a 70% capacity factor [in what country or countries?] to be profitable. Claims that China shuts down its coal power plants during the day, which seems unlikely to me. Claims that at the end of the third quarter this year, “China’s renewable energy generating capacity had reached 1.73 terawatts, a year-on-year increase of 25%.” Confusedly claims that the difference between the 25% increase in total renewable energy capacity and the 21% increase in the pace of renewable energy installations results from installing batteries and therefore improving the capacity factor of solar, but of course there is not particular reason why these figures ought to be close (it just indicates that growth is nearly exponential) and both numbers are nameplate capacities into which the batteries don’t figure at all. Claims China has installed more solar than the rest of the world combined this year, which is of course true. Claims Tesla’s installation of [utility-scale?] batteries this year is double that of last year, and that they have a two-year backlog of orders.

on 02024-07-24#video about #bootstrapping a spot-welder from a 1.5V battery? #clickbait He’s extracting the carbon rod from a carbon-zinc battery (“Rabbit” brand, which is maybe a Vietnamese thing?) and then uses like a 12-volt scooter battery or something? His bottle of 28% sulfuric acid is labeled in Vietnamese; he uses it to corrode some of the peeled-off battery casing, producing hydrogen bubbles, and perhaps to clean the carbon. He sands the surface of the carbon electrode, maybe to bring it to a point. He uses some leftover copper pipe as an electrode holder, piercing the electrode end of it with a drill for some reason, after “center-punching” it with a nail. Then he mounts the copper electrode holder in a bamboo handle. A little more drill action on the non-electrode end, drilling at an angle through the pipe end, and he can insert a wire, fold it over, twist it around, and hold it in place with the bamboo. He strips his wires with a box cutter, rolling the wire along the blade. He crimps on his large alligator clips with diagonal cutters. His power source for the spot welder is the 36V rechargeable battery from his cordless drill! A couple of pieces of steel wire stuck into its terminals can be connected to the alligator clips. The carbon can draw an arc from the other alligator clip. Before spot welding, he cleans the surface with the sulfuric on a Q-tip. He feeds some twisted steel (or solder?) wire into the arc in order to make the weld, blowing out the carbon when it catches on fire. The sulfuric seems to be his only flux, and he’s welding on stainless, so his penetration is terrible. This battery DC arc welding is very quiet, though, with just the hiss of an arc. After a few minutes of such welding, the battery seems to be dead. A rat-tail file cleans up some of the worst of the weld.

And the actual cutting part is the torch, which he doesn’t make.
on 02024-05-31camping #video in the UK. Largely a review video for a big brown “cabin-style” tent with a fire-resistant mat where the wood stove goes. Hmm, this campfire in the middle of dry leaf litter seems ill-advised; he’s sawing firewood with his portable saw and splitting it with his camping knife. The folding camp table made out of tent poles is interesting. He demonstrated the TCES flameless ration heater used to cook a US MRE (powered by iron and magnesium). And then police were called — the week before, when he was cooking hotdogs in a fire pit with his dad, because a jogger saw them taking their shotgun out of the car into the woods. Their own woods! But not because of the cabin tent. #clickbait

on 02024-04-0610-person US$10 10-minute temporary cabin from pallet wrap. They delimbed some trees and wrapped pallet wrap around them, then I guess delimbed and lashed together some saplings (with pallet wrap!) to form gables and put pallet wrap on that too to keep the rain out. They have a nifty folding bow saw, but all the time to delimb the trees with the saw and axes is not included in the 10 minutes, and looks like it was more like three or four hours. Lashing with pallet wrap is a nice idea, giving the appearance of things being connected by spiderwebs, though it was completely unnecessary to do most of it while standing on a stepladder; they could have lashed things together on the ground and then lifted them into place. Even after doing all the delimbing ahead of time, and working in a pine forest planted in neat rows for logging, it took them over 30 minutes and about a roll and a half of pallet wrap, and they didn’t have a door yet, and wind blew under the walls until they piled up pine needles, and it was big enough to sleep maybe four or five people. Adding a door involved a “zip wall system”, basically a long zipper with sticky tape on it which they stuck on one side of the plastic wrap and magically opened, like the door the girl draws in Pan’s Labyrinth. Stretching pallet wrap over a log frame makes a soft cot top, which they then supported on logs. They showed another plastic-wrap cabin nearby that was a year and a half old which looked pretty intact. #video #clickbait #bootstrapping
on 02024-04-06#clickbait underground “tunnel” shelter #video. With a narrow shovel and a lot of sweat, she carves an elaborate bedroom out of the hard, dry clay, including a fireplace, in the hillock under a tree (a commenter says it's an old termite mound, which is why it’s rock-free). The bed and table are elaborately-squared-off blocks of clay, with chamfers to prevent chipping. Beneath the tree there is no risk of a cave-in; apparently the tree does not have a taproot. Maybe she’s Filipina or Vietnamese; her machete curves forward. She lashes a frame together from machete-cut saplings with vines to form a door for her entrance, sloped like a conventional US cellar door. Lashings to hatchet-pounded stakes serve for hinges. Sod cut with the shovel serves to cover both the spoil pile from the excavation and the door itself. A candle illuminates from an alcove carved into the bedroom wall. Smoke from the wood fire up the chimney makes her presence obvious; she could really benefit from Cesar’s pyrolytic coffee-can stove. Coals raked from the wood fire into a cooking pit permit cooking pineapple brochettes and a steak on a Korean-style barbecue on a steel grill she brought, though possibly also risking carbon monoxide poisoning. She cooks with tongs and a kitchen knife, eating with the knife, without chopsticks. A silky-looking green tarp protects her from the bare clay of the bed. The grass in the area seems to be of a mowed variety. Another commenter claims that the interior is not actually filmed in the same place as the exterior, but at 17'22" we can see that it at least has the same tiny entrance, which has the tree roots cut off in the same place. #scouting #bushcraft #stealth-camping

I like the blower design: an axial blower (maybe a microwave oven fan?) stuffed into a two-meter-long galvanized 100mm stovepipe to keep it two meters away from the fire, with an elbow at the end to stop thermal radiation. The barrel design was not optimal for burning the oil, but an old blanket as a wick helped. The air inlet must have been further off the bottom than it looked for the oil to pool in the bottom of the drum instead of running out the air inlet. Despite the #clickbait title, they also used potassium nitrate and sulfur.
