The #GTK 2 reference manual.
I didn't realize there was a #DirectFB port of #GTK!
apparently #GTK 3 no longer exposes low-level text drawing routines; instead you have to use fucking #Pango and #Cairo.
this is the #Pango function to find out how wide #GTK thinks some text should be; it’s not mapped in lablgtk2.
This is the function to draw a line of text in #Pango (and #GTK). It invokes draw_shaped_glyphs, which is private. It’s not mapped in lablgtk2.
this #security bullshit (CVE-2011-0064 buffer overflow arbitrary code execution) is why I never want to use #Pango for anything. It’s the HarfBuzz OpenType “text shaping engine” that is responsible.
RHSA-2011:1325-01 (CVE-2011-3193) was an additional #security problem in #Pango and HarfBuzz — probably another arbitrary-code-execution hole in, this time, font file parsing. This was equally a bug in #Qt.
An overview of the #Pango API (and HarfBuzz)
Another #Pango security hole, this time on text with long glyphstrings (such as, I think, Zalgo text, but maybe also a long document.location in Firefox). This one from 2009. (CVE-2009-1194 I think?)
#Cairo has two text rendering APIs of its own: the toy API, which takes UTF-8 and doesn’t do kerning, RTL, or even correct diacritics, and the low-level API, which lets you specify the glyph indexes and positions. cairo_show_glyphs and cairo_glyph_extents are probably the right thing. lablgtk2 doesn’t map any Cairo functions.
Example #Cairo code showing different things you can do with text in Cairo in #GTK. Part of a GTK #tutorial.
There are #OCaml bindings to #Cairo; even though they are not part of lablgtk2, they work with lablgtk2. I don’t know how to do gdk_cairo_create() in lablgtk2 though.
#OCaml doesn’t support getting multicore performance by #multithreading, which is perhaps unsurprising since it uses an incremental garbage collector; it does support Python-GIL-style multithreading for the purpose of not rewriting your loops in explicit CPS. When bytecode-executing (ocamlc rather than ocamlopt) it can use emulated threads.
More on #OCaml #multithreading.
That jerk Jon Harrop says he thinks #OCaml #multithreading’s lack of multicore #performance scalability is due to the GC, and that OCaml has become less popular since the dawn of the multicore era as a result.
#GTK 2’s drawing model. This kind of overview is missing completely from the GTK 3 manual. It explains, for example, that you get a GDK_EVENT_EXPOSE event when you need to redraw a region of a GdkWindow, which may contain an entire tree of widgets, and GTK+ then invokes the expose-event signal on the appropriate widget or widgets, and that GTK_DOUBLE_BUFFERED is turned on by default, but you may want to invoke gtk_widget_set_double_buffered(widget, FALSE) to turn it off, and that you can turn on GTK_APP_PAINTABLE on a GtkWindow or GtkEventBox in order to let you paint them instead, or you can use a GtkDrawingArea.
The ::expose-event signal in #GTK, replaced with a ::draw signal in GTK 3.
The #GTK 3 porting guide suggests that you can make your life happier by drawing things with #Cairo instead of using GDK, since GTK 3 just uses Cairo, and there is no more GdkGC or GdkImage. Nearby it shows how to clip in Cairo to avoid overdraw.
The #GTK 3 porting guide explains how to change from expose-event from GTK 2 to draw in GTK 3.
The ::button-press-event signal is how to be informed in #GTK that a mouse has been clicked. Similarly there are key-press-event etc.
Google trends shows #Clojure search interest coming from zero in 2008 and now a few times higher than #OCaml, a bit below F# (whose upward trend crossed OCaml’s downward trend in 2008), and about equal to GHC. Sadly, “Haskell” and “Scala” are not useful search terms, and even “F#” may not be.
