on 02024-04-03DIY vapor-compression #cooling as the first stage in a two-stage cascade cryocooler using 49 grams of propane (R290), initially using a US$80 reciprocating refrigerant compressor off eBay, which he had to add new “ester oil” to. He built his 5.5-meter-long interstage heat exchanger as a coaxial heat exchanger by soldering together copper elbows and other tubing. He recommends silicone caulk rather than teflon taper or plumber’s putty for threaded pressure fittings, but of course most of the connections in the refrigerant circuit are soldered. He immersed the propane-charged apparatus in a bathtub of water to check for leaks, finding one in a pressure gauge. He achieved -32° with his initial reciprocating compressor (ambient temperature a few days later 23.7°), then replaced it with a rotary compressor, which overloaded his homemade condenser coil, so he obtained a better condenser from #hoarding a used air conditioner. This enables him to cool water above freezing at 116 watts (0.83°/minute for 2ℓ), a disappointing CoP of 0.17, probably because he designed his capillary tube for a larger ΔT. #video

on 02024-04-03#Tech-Ingredients “nearly free air conditioning” by blackbody radiation into the sky with aluminum tape. Ingenious design for their thermal radiator/heat exchanger/passive low temperature solar collector panel: aluminum channels bonded with epoxy, plus foam blocks to reduce the water volume, and aluminum sheets for the faces. Polyethylene Glad film prevents convective cooling, and he airbrushes a white high-emissivity coating (barium sulfate as specified in a later video, probably nanoparticles of varied sizes with a bit of binder) onto the aluminum. Propylene glycol prevents his water coolant from freezing. He got cooling to -7.6° in an 0.5° environment. #cooling #energy #video
