on 02026-08-10#Applied-Science #video on using Cloudray’s GM-100 US$7000 100-watt MOPA laser to engrave diffraction patterns (LIPS: laser-induced periodic structuring) and near-holograms on stainless steel with LightBurn. “MOPA” is “master oscillator power amplifier” and gives you a lot of control over the pulse power waveform from a fiber laser. He holds his too-thin stainless-steel sheets down with an aluminum vacuum chuck to get repeatable focusing, which doubles as a heatspreader and a heatsink. 300mm/s and 300kHz, thus 1μm pitch, worked well to get diffraction gratings, which he thinks are made of varying-thickness oxide layers changing the phase delay. He was using 45ns pulses at 19.6% power. He tried making optical #holograms: “How could you not do it after you realize you have full pitch and angle control over a #diffraction grating?”.

on 02025-05-28#video #Applied-Science holy shit, Ben Krasnow now has high-speed camera lighting that’s brighter than the arc welding he was filming, but only at 450nm, naturally called “Helios”. The LEDs are running at 1 kilowatt in 10μs pulses at 1kHz, synchronized with the camera shutter, so he doesn’t need eye protection to look at it, and the average heat dissipation is “only” 10 watts. I’ve never seen a welding puddle like this before. This is amazing. Similarly for plasma cutting and laser cutting, including laser cutting of quartz and aluminum oxide.

on 02024-04-03"Applied Science" is Google employee Ben Krasnow, who does awesome science #video demos: bending wood with ammonia, using his home electron microscope to take stop-motion videos of a record being played by a pickup, an experimental rocket motor using acrylic and gaseous oxygen, the perennial favorite of homemade silica #aerogel, supercritical CO₂ caffeine extraction, etc.
