"Ilo" is a simple MISC stack machine with an environment called "Konilo" built on top of it. This implementation is 150 lines of C. 65,536 32-bit cells of memory, no bytes, keyboard input, serial display, Forth-like block storage of 1024 cells per block, 30 instructions. There’s an implementation of it on PJRC’s 1MiB-RAM #Teensy 4.1 devboard. #virtual-machines #Forth #small-is-beautiful

#video about #hoarding old TVs, specifically a Samsung CW-28D83N CRT unit. He gets two speakers (8Ω 10W), a heatsink from the electron-gun driver, some resistors, electrolytic caps, ceramic caps, film caps, some zeners, etc. He thinks the yoke has “very interesting parts” because magnet wire is “very expensive” and it has a “good chunk of ferrite” and another one. He also likes recycling wires. He’s even excited about the steel wires between the springs that held the CRT in. Okay, the degaussing coil actually is pretty fine magnet wire, though I wouldn’t describe it as having “epthepthional” quality as he does. He also really likes the powerline RFI filter, which is on a separate single-layer board, and he power cable, and the flyback transformer. And the pushbuttons, and the infrared phototransistor, and the PTC overcurrent safety, and more film caps from the main board, an NTC probe, the bridge rectifier, some 7805-family regs, more resistors and electrolytics and inductors, and the big chopper transformer, and the hard-to-find big transistors for driving the deflection yoke. He keeps saying each diode is Zener, which makes me wonder if he just thinks all diodes are Zener diodes, except for a couple of Schottkys; I think he also maybe identified a couple of MOVs as ceramic caps, but maybe I’m just misidentifying ceramic caps as MOVs. He likes the TDA7297 audio amp chip and the heatsinks. Oh, toward the end he identifies an epoxy power rectifier as a diode without saying it’s a Zener, but then he misidentifies the glass signal diode next to it as a Zener, despite being contradicted by the silkscreen. This is kind of borderline; I don’t think this quite deserves a plonk for “electro jungla”, but it’s so not a high-quality video. #electronics #hardware

#video on DIY #manufacturing for prototypes on a shoestring, nominally for fishing, with shitty elevator music. Many excellent techniques, very clearly filmed. Filing the jaw serrations off a clothespin. Supergluing an inner-tube section to it. Cutting it off flush with a snap-off box cutter. Softening the clothespin with a pencil butane torch. Bending it to shape with needlenose pliers. Cutting a section of broken umbrella rib with diagonal cutters. Shaping its end with a Dremel. Melting it into the clothespin with the butane torch. Forming a mold around it with masking tape and filling it with hot glue to hold it in place reliably. Adding a heatshrink handle to the metal with the torch. Using the clothespin to tie a hangman’s-noose-like knot onto a fishhook, then a similar one around the shaft of another fishhook. Cutting up a soft plastic syringe with a box cutter. Melting a round hole through its plunger with a screwdriver heated with the torch. Heating a steel spring to melt it into the end of the syringe body. Slipping the plunger through the spring and into the syringe body to form a spring-loaded plunger. Using the combination for fishhook manipulation again, and to tie knots in fishing line. Removing the remaining flux from a dilapidated stick-welding rod by crushing it with needle-nose pliers. Spinning it in a drill chuck in sandpaper to polish it. Bending it into a circle with improbably small round-nose pliers (apparently welding rod is annealed‽). Shaping the ends of the welding rod with a file and Dremel. Drilling corks with an electric wood drill. Shoving the now-pointed welding rod through the corks. Supergluing the corks in place along the welding rod. Hardening superglue with baking soda. Spinning the corks with the drill in sandpaper to even them out. Bending the rod into a pointed hook with a float. Cutting a soft plastic enteral-feeding syringe body with a hacksaw blade. Cutting it on Sharpie marks with diagonal cutters. Deburring the edges with a box cutter. Cutting the plastic with scissors. Flame-polishing the cut edge with the torch. Softening the plastic with the torch and hand-bending it while soft. Melting holes in it with a soldering iron. Improving the holes (?) with an electric drill. Melting the ends of a thin plastic tube with a cigarette lighter to get them to swell up a bit so they can’t go through the holes. Forming a plastic grommet for a wire loop in this way from a short section of plastic tube, cut with scissors. Various fishing-line knotting techniques. Puncturing a Kinder Egg at each end with a steel awl. Drilling out the holes to size with an electric wood drill. Cutting ends off a Q-tip with scissors to get a plastic tube to thread through the Kinder Egg holes. Supergluing it in place. Bending wire into a sort of cotter pin to install in the plastic tubing. Cutting a cigarette-lighter flint spring with diagonal cutters. Threading the spring and beads onto the cotter pin. Heating its pliers-bent end so a bead melts onto it.
#Thought-Emporium #video on holographic #optics and how commercial holographic patterns are hot-stamped, but he’s making computed holograms with a film camera and Rafael de la Fuente’s Diffractsim. Explains how diffraction works with animations and shows many other diffraction phenomena, including the Arago spot. Photographs a zoneplate on Ilford ISO 50 pan film; plans to use Adox CMS 20 super-high-resolution film. Projects the hologram from the film negative with a pinhole-aperture white LED rather than a laser. Also hopes to use photon sieves in the future.
Terminal Autonomy’s AQ400 Scythe #drones have a range of 750km and are being made from wood “in former furniture factories in #Ukraine. (...) Mr Serra-Martins, a former Australian Army Royal Engineer, set up the company with his Ukrainian co-founder, backed by US finance. It is one of at least three companies now producing drones in Ukraine at scale. (...) Terminal Autonomy’s Scythe drone uses visual positioning – navigating its course and examining the terrain by Artificial Intelligence. There is no pilot involved. (...) What you’re seeing now is like nothing compared to what you’ll see by the end of the year.” #weaponry The article also covers #Palantir’s involvement, including route planning for the drones.

#video on #China/#USA politics trying to keep out electric vehicles with 100% tariffs while US car companies spend their government EV research grants on stock buybacks. High-end electric cars, electric dumptrucks, and even electric mopeds support battery-change recharging (battery-swap charging); it’s commercially deployed. They’re very impressed with how advanced all the Chinese cars are, and also positively impressed with how accommodating the auto parts manufacturers they met with were, especially by contrast to US and Canadian companies.

#video of Scott Ritter #interview predicting imminent surrender of #Ukraine, that Europe is “disintegrating before our eyes” because of an immigration crisis (?), the EU and NATO will collapse, etc. Seems like pro-Putin propaganda? #video of Scott Ritter #interview predicting imminent surrender of #Ukraine, as of two days ago, and its nonexistence this winter. Says Russia just recaptured the original 02014 line of demarcation in the Donbas, and almost the entire Cabinet resigned yesterday. Again Ritter says “de-Nazification”, which makes it especially interesting that he says that Russia is “seeking to destroy the rules-based international order, and it’s going to do that through the strengthening of the #BRICS forum,” which apparently Türkiye has just entered, and “Iran and Saudi Arabia are already in, so is UAE”. (Türkiye did indeed just enter, and Iran and Saudi Arabia are in.) But also he seems to be saying that Russia and China are trying to get India to join BRICS, which makes no sense. Ritter predicts that NATO will collapse when Türkiye pulls out. #politics
