on 02025-10-18#video about nakst’s Essence OS: “better than #TempleOS” but the video is a 2-hour stream so I don't think I’m going to watch it. He does get it running in QEMU. The streamer is impressed with things like the guy writing his own C-like scripting language interpreter, using his own Tk-like GUI thing for the build configuration (under Linux; it is cool that it has such a thing but unfortunate that it is using a VGA font), that it uses busybox to provide a POSIX environment, etc. He says a translucent overlay saying “Text copied” when he hits ^C is “damn sexy”. Seems to have nice small executables: 15K for a GUI game of 2048, 14K for an IRC client, 74K for the file manager. It uses a “.esx” extension for these. Busybox does run successfully under it, but it’s not succeding in launching any other executables, giving a spurious “Out of memory” error. He is not impressed with the “script console” which gives an nicely formatted error on everything he tries, even the “help” command. He looks at the 2048 game, which is 13K of C++, but in a fairly C-ish style. Seems like drawing is done by handling ES_MSG_PAINT messages in a ProcessApplicationMessage(EsMessageReceive()) loop, like in Win32 or Win16. There’s a hello-world in C. So this guy (#Tsoding?) streamed writing the Game of Life for it without looking at the documentation, just example code. He ran into a lot of hitches like needing to explicitly request redraws. He solicits donations via Bitcoin but also complains about the cryptocurrency fad.
