#manufacturing small articles from superglue, and baking soda, in blu-tack molds? Repeating thin alternating layers of superglue and baking soda (he says “baking powder” but I suspect he’s confused) work best. Round-trip time is very quick, only a couple of minutes. At first I thought he might be using fillers but actually he just painted the parts after #casting. The process of removing the form from the blu-tack introduced noticeable distortion into the overall shape. #video

#video on #jugaad #vacuum setup using bicycle check valves (Dunlop type) for the vacuum, a plastic syringe as the pump, and a glass jam jar as the vacuum chamber. You can melt holes in the polyethylene syringe with a soldering iron to mount a Dunlop valve for egress. Sealed airtight with epoxy, which probably isn’t as good as sealing wax but is probably just as good as the rest of the plastic syringe. A sawed-off Dunlop valve in a drilled hole in the jar’s metal lid serves as a hose fitting for a zip-tied rubber (?) hose to connect the syringe. At 3'50” there’s a demo of using it to degas epoxy for #casting. At 6'10” a demo of degassing two-part silicone.
#video on #jugaad #vacuum setup using a Harbor Freight “Pittsburgh” hand-powered brake bleeder vacuum pump kit, silicone sealant, a big glass jar, some weatherstripping hot-glued to the jar bottom, and a silicone baking mat to make a vacuum gasket for the big glass jar top, cutting it with scissors. I think probably it would be good to wrap the large glass jar in some kind of metal mesh to protect you from flying glass shards when it implodes. He Dremels a hole through the glass lid with a tiny spherical grinding stone and a spray bottle of water as coolant. Also he confuses 20 inHg with psi.

#Dwarkesh #Karpathy #interview on #AI and #neural-networks is pretty thought-provoking. Karpathy endorses Feynman’s definition of learning: “It’s the only way to build. If I can’t build it, I don’t understand it. That’s a Feynman quote, I believe. I 100% have always believed this very strongly, because there are all these micro things that are just not properly arranged and you don’t really have the knowledge. You just think you have the knowledge. So don’t write blog posts, don’t do slides, don’t do any of that. Build the code, arrange it, get it to work. It’s the only way to go. Otherwise, you’re missing knowledge.” #toread since I’m only up to about 2 hours.

#video by #Giestas on #manufacturing a cup from used coffee grounds by binding them with agar and honey, melted in a double boiler before stirring in the grounds, then pressing the soft mass into a three-part mold made with #3D-printing, about 1cm thick. It suffers cracking damage from wetting/drying cycles. Oil of wintergreen to prevent mold, and he makes a planting pot. Relative quantities of honey, agar, oil of wintergreen, and coffee grounds are not disclosed. #materials
#Giestas #video on #manufacturing an egg-shell-filled bioplastic bowl: 100mℓ water, 10mℓ glycerin, 15g agar, 2 drops clove oil, 100g eggshell (membrane removed, soapy-water-cleaned, oven sterilized, ground with mortar and pestle). So I guess the product is about 80% eggshell. He uses two glass bowls as the mold for #casting the thicker bowl. #materials
#Giestas #video on #manufacturing cork-filled-agar-soled sandals using a corrugated-sole mold made from corrugated cardboard. The cork came from diced wine corks ground in a coffee grinder and sifted with a kitchen sifter to separate into cut, coarse, medium, and fine grades. 3 parts glycerin plasticizes 4 parts agar. A tiny amount of charcoal, ground in a mortar, is an additional filler for color. #Casting the heavily filled gloop in the cardboard mold looks fiddly. Used-tea-leaf tannin colors the alginate “leather” straps: 1 part alginate, 2 parts glycerin, 30 parts brown water, apparently by volume. The leather is crosslinked with a spray of 1 part CaCl₂ in 10 parts water. A box cutter tracing a masking-tape strap model tested over a sock cuts out the straps, which fit between the bottom sole and a lighter “midsole” made with 3 parts agar to 2 parts glycerin filled with coarser cork. Then the upper sole (insole) is softer, 1 part agar to 1 part glycerin filled with fine cork pigmented with mortar-ground tea leaves. Baked 1 hour at 100° with the fan on. #materials

#manufacturing fake leather #materials from orange peel #video (Susana Jurado, Elisenda Jaquemot, Nuria Bonet) from 20g wool, 5 ℓ water, 135g sodium alginate, 421 g (?!) glycerin, 56g coconut oil, an undisclosed quantity of calcium chloride, and I guess orange peel as a filler, but only 120g of it (maybe that’s the dry weight because it looks like it’s about 2–4 oranges, and they do run it through a dehydrator before grinding it to sawdust and sifting). The wool is added in hunks after 24 hours, and then the calcium chloride is sprayed on the top and bottom before drying 3–7 days. Fab Lab Barcelona, part of the SISCODE project.

#video about a minimal post-apocalyptic #sewing kit without a sewing machine. She likes leather thimbles, but puts seam rippers and tape measures on her nice-to-have list. Her seam-ripper/awl tool has a really nice design where the steel holders for the tooltips are supported on pairs of o-rings set into grooves in them so that they fit firmly when they slide into the metal bushings in the wooden handle. She also likes round-nose needle-nose pliers (for when needles are hard to pull out) and tweezers (for tying knots when you didn’t leave enough thread at the end of a seam). For a home sewing space she also recommends tailor’s shears, additional scissors for things like boning, a tomato pincushion, and another cushion for when you want to put down your needle. And a clear plastic quilting ruler. And a French curve for drafting. And an iron.
apparently "Plasti Dip" is a goo you can dip metal parts in to quickly add a non-slip rubberized coating, “usually used in adding grip to hand tools”. I guess it’s like dissolved in some kind of solvent that evaporates? #manufacturing #materials #video
#video on #vanlife #stealth-camping by "Jana Vanana", who says she’s been doing it for 7 years and in particular has been stealth camping around Perth without any issues for over a year, even though most parking lots have no-camping signs. Her top tips are:
Condensation (in winter), for which she uses Bar’s Bugs anti-fog spray on her windshield.
Window covers: no reflective window covers in the front windows, because they’re conspicuous, but black umbrella-style sunshades on the windshield are totally common. She hangs a black cloth behind the front seats instead of trying to cover up the side windows of the cab. The other windows are blacked out with removable “blackout static cling window film” (for houses, not cars), so they look dark tinted, but let no light out.
Make people think you left, opening and closing a car door after you park.
Parking spot. She prefers parking near apartment buildings and never parks near the main entrances to houses. “For all anyone knows, I’m just visiting someone.” For larger vans, like the one she used to have: industrial areas like near the Auckland airport. Or parks without public toilets, or building sites where nobody lives yet, quiet streets between commercial buildings.
Keep the cab clean, no blankets and food wrappers.
Use headphones to watch movies.
Bathroom needs: laundry detergent bottles for men, kilogram-sized protein powder bottles or coffee cans for women.
Avoid parking near public toilets, because “rangers” (?!) check for stealth campers there first.
Exit through the front, because the side sliding door makes a loud van sound.
Park late, leave early. Before it gets late, you can park in a supermarket or public pool parking lot for a few hours.
Rotate locations: don’t stay in the same place two nights in a row, but cycle through a few different locations.
Keep your van clean on the outside as well.
Waay too much talking head footage, but whatever. A commenter suggests auto repair shops, since they always have new vehicles appearing. Another commenter points out that snoring makes as much noise as listening to a movie without headphones.
