#Veritasium #video about #power-laws like the "St. Petersburg Paradox" in #statistics, where the expectation of a heavy-tailed distribution diverges. Sometimes “two exponentials are dancing together to make a power law”, moving on to earthquake magnitudes and how the Ising model of ferromagnetism at the Curie temperature is scale-free, and then how a simple model of forest fires produces self-organized criticality. Also, in Per Bak’s sandpile automata. And how VC firms, wildfire insurance, streaming video platforms, and book publishing are governed by power-law distributions. And Albert-László Barabási and Réka Albert’s simulation of power-law link behavior on the internet.

#video on #hoarding thrift-store sweaters for yarn for knitting or #crochet; she recommends looking for finished edges of knitting at the seams, if there are seams, rather than cut edges sewn together with a serger. She washed the garments before unraveling them; this caused her roving-yarn H&M sweater to pill up, which caused it to snag a lot when she was unraveling it onto her yarn winder. She got a pretty staggering amount of yarn actually, 400+ “yards” from the US$5.75 H&M sweater, about 25% of the cost of new yarn, while the Style & Co. sweater gave her 2400 “yards” of very fine yarn for the same Goodwill price, one tenth the cost of new yarn. But she spent 14½ hours buying, seam-ripping, and unraveling. I feel like you could unravel the sweater panels while you were knitting or crocheting something new from them. #fiber-arts
#video by the rather formidable #Engineering-Knits claiming that for US$8 at the thrift store you can find silk sweaters, cashmere sweaters, and wool sweaters to unravel for #fiber-arts. But for some reason the one she’s unraveling is 25% acrylic. Has the very important tip that moth-proofing is a must-do #1 priority; she prefers baking her sweaters in the oven at 75° for 40 minutes, but puts her plastic sweaters in the freezer for three days to kill the moth eggs. Repeats the tip about looking for chain-stitched seams holding together finished knit edges. Runs into alternating rows knit with two different yarns, so the sleeve (for example) becomes two equal-length balls of yarn, but two different yarns. She prefers washing her yarn after unraveling the garments rather than before. She demonstrates her motor-driven unraveling machine, her manual ball winder, and a machine she uses for plying the yarn up into a thicker gauge multi-ply yarn. #hoarding
