this morning and last night

Well, Marilyn and I went out to the Winds Cafe in Yellow Springs last
night, which was delightful -- we were trying to make up for missing our
date the night before. Unfortunately, the movie we wanted to watch was
no longer playing; we ended up renting "The Pink Panther".

At midnight that night, I went to see Spike and Mike's Sick and Twisted
1998 Animation Festival. Some of the pieces were hilarious and
uplifting; most of them were so sad they weren't even funny. Brad and
Matt came to watch it with me, which was more important than the movie,
though.

I didn't have any time to try out my shiny new kernel, obviously.

This morning I got up at 7:20. (Marilyn had said she didn't think I could
get up at 7:00 like she planned to; I wanted to demonstrate that her
lack of confidence was without foundation.) Marilyn wasn't up yet; I
made her coffee, did the dishes, and crawled into bed with her. She
eventually got up around 9:00.

We went to "The Cannery", a farmer's market downtown. We didn't buy
much (just breakfast), but we walked around quite a bit and looked at
interesting things. And a dog, which is more than just a thing. A
springer spaniel, to be exact. Marilyn was enamored of the dog; I liked
it quite a bit. We agreed to meet at the Humane Society to meet its
(apparent) littermate and to look at other dogs.

Well, eventually, I found my way there, but Marilyn had given up on me
arriving, and left already. I looked at the dogs for a few minutes,
then left.

I came home to discover that ALSA needs sound support built into
the kernel. (Imagine! It says so in the first paragraph of the ALSA
install file. It just didn't mention it in the ALSA howto I found
Thursday, which I can't seem to find at all at the moment.) So I need
to spend another hour and a half rebuilding my kernel again, because I
turned off sound support last time, thinking it would cause problems.

My CPU fan is making funny noises again; I wonder if it's possible to
get it replaced.

I'm still looking forward to sound support.
