new kernel and other techie stuff

Well, the new kernel seems to be working rather nicely. Except that
the Sun doesn't netboot any more, and I can't tell why. It
successfully rarps for its address and tftps the netboot program; the
netboot program successfully rarps for its address, gets its default
gateway and root filesystem via bootparamd, and loads the kernel via
NFS; the kernel comes up to the point where it tries to mount the root
filesystem (apparently), saying:
enabling interrupts
boot device: le0
nfs_boot: trying RARP (and RPC/bootparam)
nfs_boot: client_addr=0xa0b124d (RARP from 0xa0b124c)
nfs_boot: timeout...
nfs_boot: timeout...
nfs_boot: timeout...
nfs_boot: bootparam whoami, error=60
no file system for le0
cannot mount root, error = 79
root device (default le0):

Meanwhile, tcpdump says
15:29:39.626833 gentle.kragenshouse.nfs > thor.kragenshouse.1077: reply ok 620 read [|nfs]
15:29:56.652611 rarp who-is 8:0:20:0:40:73 tell 8:0:20:0:40:73
15:29:56.652611 rarp reply 8:0:20:0:40:73 at thor.kragenshouse
15:29:56.942611 arp who-has thor.kragenshouse tell thor.kragenshouse
15:29:56.942611 thor.kragenshouse.1023 > 10.255.255.255.sunrpc: udp 96
15:29:57.942370 thor.kragenshouse.1023 > 10.255.255.255.sunrpc: udp 96
15:29:59.941890 thor.kragenshouse.1023 > 10.255.255.255.sunrpc: udp 96
15:30:02.941116 thor.kragenshouse.1023 > 10.255.255.255.sunrpc: udp 96
15:30:06.939934 thor.kragenshouse.1023 > 10.255.255.255.sunrpc: udp 96
15:30:12.138439 thor.kragenshouse.1023 > 10.255.255.255.sunrpc: udp 96
15:30:17.326913 thor.kragenshouse.1023 > 10.255.255.255.sunrpc: udp 96
15:30:22.515410 thor.kragenshouse.1023 > 10.255.255.255.sunrpc: udp 96

So it's sending bunches of 96-byte requests to the subnet broadcast
address RPC port -- perhaps for bootparamd? I don't know why it's
doing that -- I'm sure that if it simply asked the bootparamd on the
host that just gave it the RARP reply, it would get an answer right
quickly.

I did compile rarp into the kernel this time instead of as a module,
and it is after all a much more modern kernel; I shall try rebooting
with the older kernel again in a bit.

Still no luck with the ALSA stuff; the drivers still refuse to load. I get:
kragen:/lib/modules/2.2.12/misc# modprobe snd-card-ens1371.o
/lib/modules/2.2.12/misc/snd.o: unresolved symbol unregister_sound_dsp
/lib/modules/2.2.12/misc/snd.o: unresolved symbol register_sound_dsp
/lib/modules/2.2.12/misc/snd.o: unresolved symbol unregister_sound_special
/lib/modules/2.2.12/misc/snd.o: unresolved symbol register_sound_special
snd: No such file or directory
snd: No such file or directory

. . . despite the fact that these symbols are listed in the System.map
in the kernel source directory with Ts next to them. Is it possible
I'm still accidentally booting the no-sound-support kernel? Dunno.
I'll find out soon!

Marilyn has invited me to eat at Amar India with her; I have to be
there in half an hour. Bye!
