#video of #bootstrapping dichromate #materials from stainless? He starts by dissolving 18/0 stainless steel forks in 98% H₂SO₄. To 789g of forks and 250g H₂SO₄ he added water. He got hydrogen bubbles and a green solution and the plastic tub started melting from the heat, so he added distilled-water ice. He used 920g sulfuric acid total. After three days much of the forks had dissolved. After a week much of the forks were dissolved and he lost patience. He tried to separate the iron sulfate from the chromium sulfate with a water recrystallization and got a lot of it out. He had 127 grams of forks left, so 662 grams dissolved. A third vacuum filtration removed most of the carbon powder. 1.5kg of sodium carbonate, a large excess, converted the chromium sulfate into hydroxide and the residual iron sulfate into iron (II) carbonate. He said a lot of the iron (II) sulfate had oxidized to iron (III), but I’m not sure if this was caused by the alkalization. The sludge settled somewhat during the night, so he siphoned off some sodium sulfate supernatant, starting the siphon with a syringe. Gravity filtration through cotton balls in plastic water bottles over two weeks concentrated the sludge somewhat, draining his soul. Then he oxidized it from Cr(III) to Cr(VI) with 760g of calcium hypochlorite. Vacuum filtration for four hours was able to separate the precipitated iron hydroxide, leaving a urine-like calcium [mono]chromate solution, which he boiled down for another week, periodically filtering out the precipitated chromate crystals. For disposal, he reduced the contaminated waste chromate with sodium sulfite in a hydrochloric acid catalyst. A reaction with more H₂SO₄ converted his yield of 62.5g of calcium chromate dihydrate to dichromate, precipitating out all the calcium as sulfate. To finally switch it to K₂Cr₂O₇ he added potassium carbonate, expecting a CaCO₃ precipitate, but what he actually had was dichromic acid at that point. He neutralized it with KOH and boiled it down further and did more vacuum filtrations to crystallize 40g of K₂Cr₂O₇, a 12% yield.
