I didn’t realize Flash #hardware was now being shipped 48 layers of #memory cells deep. The two-dimensional shrink doubling time has now slowed to I think 27 months (Samsung was at 19nm at the beginning of 2014 and should be at 12nm at the beginning of 2017, an areal density increase of 2.5× in 36 months, putting the doubling time at 27 months) but they seem to be leapfrogging Moore’s Law by piling on layers, with the result that DIMM-sized SSDs now hold nearly a terabyte.
