on 02026-02-15#video #documentary on #NIMBY in #Andalusia, #Spain, fighting #solar #energy because the #PV parks are proliferating, and the Spanish state are expropriating the lands of farmers to reach their goals, which is "in their backyard" in a far more literal sense than the usual one. “Renovables sí, pero no así”. Etc. I didn’t finish it.
on 02025-11-25human-interest #documentary #video by Björn Platz on energetics in old-highrise demolition, mining, #materials science, film special effects, airbags, etc., including the history with Ascanio Sobrero. Significant factual errors, including Sobrero’s first name, the health effects of nitrate, and the physical state of liners turned into jets. Shows the use of burning pollen in film special effects, which is totally hilarious, and the use of 3-D modeling software in granite quarrying, and nanodiamonds and nanosupercrystals (of carborundum?).
on 02024-07-06old #video #documentary on #Nitinol #materials showing heat engine #mechanisms at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, by Ridgeway Banks, assisted by Professor McMillan. The video credits Stewart Brand for first drawing attention to it in CoEvolution Quarterly. Looks like about 01975. They were hoping they could convert waste heat into a solution to the energy crisis.
on 02024-07-06#video #documentary about the French Foreign Legion by Taylor Cavanaugh, a former Navy SEAL who went there after prison and just got out after five years. 92 minutes. #toread
on 02024-07-06“what they don’t tell you about life in India” hour-long #documentary #video from 02012. First, the life of a young goldsmith or gold sweeper from Agra who has moved to Kolkata to seek his fortune, sweeping trace amounts of gold off the street where the other goldsmiths wash, paying 200 rupees per person in rent. Then, the life of some fenugreek farmers in squatters’ shacks on a municipal beach in Mumbai, and their children going to school, and their underground pub which serves only rum, until the municipal government bulldozes the settlement, which the residents rebuild the same day. There’s a sluicing plant on the banks of the Ganges which refines the sludge the gold sweepers retrieve from the drains. One of the goldsmiths considers moving to a rented room nearby which costs 2000 rupees a month, but it’s too expensive, until he finds a sludge buyer who offers a better price, and he haggles the room down to 1600 rupees a month. Very informative about #poverty.
