#Clough42 #video on #precision #manufacturing via #3D-printing, specifically, his filled ABS system (“eSUN ABS+”) shrank by about one part in 300, which ended up being half a millimeter in a 151-mm screw hole spacing part. He measures the hole distance with gauge pins and digital calipers by averaging the outside-of-pins distance with the inside-of-pins distance. “Typical ABS has over 0.8% shrinkage rate. ABS+ is less than 0.4%,” but actually he measured about 0.58% (5800ppm, or about 73ppm/°, assuming the part is at 100° while printing). His proprietary slicer Simplify3D has an option in Tools→Options→Models→Import actions→Scale All to do this automatically.

on 02024-08-27#Clough42 #electroplating with nickel to prevent rust. He’s using 2ℓ vinegar and 1 tbsp salt, strips of nickel he bought off Amazon, using 3A through about 8000mm² of nickel strip to make his nickel acetate bath, without anode bags. He got 26 volts at 3A and 18 volts at 2A so I guess there’s a lot of ohmic losses in his bath, which dropped over time. Eventually he dropped the current to 2A because he was worried about melting his plastic tub. After a couple of hours he got noticeable uneven nickel deposits on the cathode. His nickel deposits on his nickel cathode were not very smooth and easily came off. On copper they did adhere. He made the mistake of trying to use vinyl gloves with acetone to clean his workpieces. In the saturated bath he got 6.3 volts at 3 amps when he was plating his first (steel) workpiece, which dropped to 5.5 volts when he moved the anodes closer. Half an hour gave him a coating that survived motorized buffing. Top comment by the current president of the National Association of Surface Finishing trade association explaining why you shouldn’t do this. #manufacturing #video #plating
