US5641391A: Three dimensional microfabrication by localized electrodeposition and etching, by Ian W. Hunter, Serge R. Lafontaine, and John D. Madden, applied in 01995. 10 μm/s localized electrodeposition of nickel in a sulfamate with a platinum electrode “at high voltages,” saying a voltage between 2.5 V and 5.0 V is appropriate. They used “microstepping motors”. To deposit polyaniline on stainless they cycled the voltage between -100mV and +750mV in a 1.0M sulfuric acid 0.1M aniline solution. Expired in 02015. #electrolysis
#epistemology “You could consider this a form of epistemic learned helplessness, where I know any attempt to evaluate the arguments is just going to be a bad idea so I don’t even try. If you have a good argument that the Early Bronze Age worked completely differently from the way mainstream historians believe, I just don’t want to hear about it. If you insist on telling me anyway, I will nod, say that your argument makes complete sense, and then totally refuse to change my mind or admit even the slightest possibility that you might be right.”

The #Dubai-lamp uses 4× the LEDs of other LED lamps. 35 AED (US$12.87) for a 3-watt bulb. The theoretical limit for any kind of light is 683 lumens per watt (green light), but white #light can only reach 44% of that (300 lm/W). Some LED chips now convert 70% of their input power into light.
The #Dubai-lamp lasts 25000 hours, which is still only 34 months. 200 lumens for 1 watt, 400 lumens for 2 watts, 600 lumens for 3 watts, 420 lumens for a 3-watt low-voltage spotlight. “Inspired by the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai,” though I thought it was maybe more of a royal command than an inspiration.
#hardware by thamart63@gmail: “Data are transmitted in a continuous data stream when the #caliper is switched on; Each complete dataset consists of a series of 24 bits; The caliper uses a 1.5V logic level, which means that we need to amplify the signal to make it compatible with #Arduino’s 5V logic; Data are transmitted by means of a data line and a clock line; The logic level of the data line needs to be read on the transition of the clock line from HIGH to LOW; Between each series of 24 bits there is a longer period during which CLK remains HIGH; The first bit is always high and does not have any proper meaning; The next bits codify the value of the caliper reading, starting with the least significant bit (LSB); In mm–mode the resulting value corresponds to the caliper measurement multiplied by 100. E.g. 1,5mm will produce the readout 150; Bit 21 is the sign bit: if bit 21 is HIGH, the value is negative.” He used a divider three 10kΩ resistors across the Arduino’s 5V supply to run the 1.5V caliper between 1.66V and 3.33V above Arduino’s ground, eliminating the need for level shifters. #metrology #protocols
