#Nighthawk #video on waterproofing and stiffening #cardboard by brushing on 500mℓ isopropanol, 125g shellac, 15g beeswax (emulsified), 2g metal stearate (slowly stirred on low heat on an electric burner outdoors). Also demonstrates a totally game changing edge-sealing technique where you cut halfway through the cardboard to isolate one side, then fold it over. Also you can stiffen the surface with wheat paste. And maybe pasting on extra layers of newspaper or paper bags. Also, you can edge-splice panels with the same cut-halfway-through technique and then pasting the sides thus isolated. He also touts his waterproofing mix as a way to make fabric waterproof, showing some very impressive demo video. His second waterproofing recipe is 100g EVA hot glue diluted with 25g paraffin wax and 20mℓ mineral oil. He also demonstrates homemade lampblack with a vegetable oil candle under an aluminum tray for UV protection, but thinks calcium stearate might work well enough for UV protection, which is his reason for including it; he recommends reacting soluble sodium stearate (made from stearic acid and lye) in water with sulfate of aluminum, zinc, or magnesium, or muriate of lime, to form the insoluble metal stearate. Doesn’t contain his usual total mangling of the science. #DIY #bootstrapping #materials
#video on fugitive child abuser Jeremiah Button’s hidden cabin “bunker” in the woods in Marathon County 30 miles from Wausau, where he survived for 3 years, dug into the hillside and concealed by underbrush, using stuff from the landfill. Electricity, a water filtration system. Quite crowded; lots of stuff hung from the ceiling. Muffin fans circulate the air. Three car batteries stored electrical energy from a bike generator and solar panels on the grassy roof (also from the landfill‽). Some storage is in jars with their lids screwed to the ceiling with two screws each. Plastic storage drawer units provided abundant storage. “He vanished two weeks before the jury trial” while out on bail. A hunter found it, but apparently not due to the panels — he just pushed the door open. Unlike the North Pond Hermit, he’d been spotted previously by the same hunter. #homeless #DIY
#video on Milwaukee #homeless person “Bunkerman” Geoffrey Graff, “this eccentric character who lived in a hole by the river,” who built a subterranean bunker with a bit of an armory, and lived in it in the forest for more than ten years; initially he was charged with some kind of crimes (maybe because he fired his gun into the river), but the charges were all dropped. #DIY
#video on #homeless people living under a bridge in Concord, CA (Contra Costa County), getting a 72-hour notice to leave because one of them built a loft under the bridge.
#video on marginally literate fugitive child abuser Jeremiah Button’s hidden cabin “bunker”, showing the bike generator. The hunter who found him, who looks a bit autistic, followed his tracks in the snow because he thought it was suspicious that someone was trying to cover his tracks. #homeless #DIY
Washington Post article from 02019 about marginally literate fugitive child abuser Jeremiah Button’s hidden cabin “bunker”. He went to the landfill daily for #hoarding, but had bought canned food in bulk while out on bail. He had lots of books on mechanical engineering. #homeless #DIY
