#data-annotation article from Time last year mentioning dataannotation.tech, outlier.ai, Surge AI, Taskup.AI, Remotasks, and gethybrid.io.
article on #data-annotation saying #Remotasks (apparently a big employer in Nairobi, originally paying $5–10 per hour, but more recently less) is part of Scale AI, and mentioning CloudFactory, based in Nepal and Kenya. Lots of discussion of the day-to-day reality of data annotation tasks.
Someone asking about #Remotasks on a subreddit for #data-annotation and similar tasks. Top-rated comment says, “I was a reviewer on 4 different projects paying $15-$18/hr and it was great, then they made this mass exodus to Outlier and it seems like ever since they did that, they’ve gone to shit. People being promised they’re going to be paid $15 and then finding out their tier is really $12, people being unfairly kicked from projects because the PMs barely speak English and are the ones making the blind benchmark tests, being bounced from project to project so often that 90% of your job is unpaid training, etc.” Someone says of dataannotation.tech, “I was making $2,500 a month with them before they banned me for using a VPN. Didn’t even realize that it was against the TOS.” Someone else says, “Gethybrid.io and DataAnnotation are apart of the same company. You can’t sign up for both with the same email. And if you do use two separate emails, they may flag your IP for having multiple accounts.” Another comment says, “I was working for Data Annotation for a year but was suddenly banned without warning and without being paid for the work I’d completed that week.” Someone else says, “DA, Hybrid, and TaskUp are subsidiaries of the same company.” Another person confirms in part: “I failed DA and tried to sign up to Hybrid but got ‘email is taken’. So used my DA login which worked. The login page is exactly like DA and it’s even at the same stage “Up now: we review your results. If you pass, we’ll email you.”” A similar dismaying report of Remotasks: “I used to work for them. I was promoted to reviewer and my account was disabled with no explanation with over $600 USD in my account. They never replied to my email.”

lots of people complaining about dataannotation.tech giving them work at first and then not. “my funds were still approved and I can still cash out. On the negative side communication and support within this company are awful, below sub-par.” #data-annotation
