Brass locking pins Loctited into the back of the chuck hold the chuck screws in place by entering into undercuts in the middle of the chuck screw threads. Uses “poor man’s internal broaching” with a square broach ground from a broken tap to make square holes to drive the chuck screws with. 19 parts in all, almost all cut from a stainless bolt.

Uses variable lever arms implemented via slots in rotating gears. And apparently a one-way freewheel or ratchet mechanism on other gears (the current design uses a literal clicky ratchet and pawl). But ratchet-based CVTs have been known for a century. This one uses elliptical gears to reduce (but not eliminate) the torque ripple that plagues ratchet-based CVTs.
