for the 1000-year #archival hardware challenge, making a time capsule that could have working electronics in 1000 years, they sort of gave up. No battery, yes solar panel, blinking LED to call attention to non-electronic text.
ICA #algorithms separate an additive mixture into independent non-Gaussian signals; nsh suggests you could use this to separate a font into additive components.
#USA #politics #California #housing #zoning apocalypse: the "Housing Accountability Act" (HAA), passed in 01990, enables the Housing and Community Development (HCD) (??) to suspend cities' zoning laws if they don't meet the Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA), which for the most part they don't, so tomorrow (Feb. 2) many cities get their laws thus suspended, called the "builder’s remedy". This has just happened in Santa Monica: “Santa Monica met 50% of their dramatically increased 2023 - 2031 housing requirements, including a 50% increase in the amount of low income housing approved over the previous 8 years — without a cent of public subsidy — in just one week. This also consists of several high-rise buildings taller than anything allowed in Santa Monica’s zoning code or city housing.” In the #SFBA only SF, Emeryville, Redwood City, Alameda City, and maybe Oakland will retain their zoning laws.

ugh, serving up static files with #Django for a simple web app is a huge pain in the ass for no reason
two approaches to serve static files with #uWSGI, including one that doesn't fall back to #Django or whatever
official #uWSGI docs on how to serve static files
#Ambimorph's approach to using #Anki for #Zettelkasten with #Emacs #org-mode (later abandoned to just use Anki directly)
how to run #uWSGI with #Django and have it serve static files (including config files, command lines, etc.) You can set check-static= or static-map= in uwsgi.ini to point to your static files, which you put in one place (settings.STATIC_ROOT) with manage.py collectstatic.
"Gunicorn", Green Unicorn is a web server for deploying #Django and other WSGI Python web apps. It looks like it might actually be simpler than #uWSGI. “... for a typical Django project, invoking Gunicorn would look like: $ gunicorn myproject.wsgi”
poorly hand-drawn sketch converted into #aiart by #Midjourney by Tomas G. Montalvo, together with some thoughts on the tired question of what art is
You can also bind #Gunicorn to Unix-domain sockets (#uds) for secure reverse proxying. Gunicorn does try to remove the socket before exiting, but of course if it gets killed or crashes this will fail. In manual testing, though, I don’t see the behavior reported in this answer where you need to manually remove the socket file to get it to restart.
how to get #nginx to proxy Unix-domain sockets (#uds): location / { proxy_pass http://datasette; proxy_set_header Host $host; } upstream datasette { server unix:/tmp/datasette.sock; }
apparently running #Gunicorn from #systemd with socket activation, there's some special way Gunicorn gets the socket from systemd, so it doesn't need a --bind or -b option?
running #Gunicorn exposed to the internet is not recommended because it sucks at #slowloris DoS attack handling; instead they recommend using #nginx, and provide a recommended configuration, including Unix-domain sockets (#uds).
